space 作“太空”“外层空间”解时是个不可数名词,不用冠词,故《高中英语教科书》上的句子是正确的。再如:

  1. The satellite has been in space for a year. 这颗人造卫星已在太空运行一年了。

  2. A satellite is an object, either natural or man-made, which travels in an orbit round another object in space. (SEFC, 2B, p. 8) 卫星(天然的或人造的)是围绕太空中另一物体的轨道运行的物体。

这道试题有重大失误:选项 D 和选项 C 都是正确的。space 除用作可数名词之外,还可用作不可数名词,作“空间”“地方”解。此时它与作“空间”解的 room 同义:

  1. The wardrobe takes up too much space/room. (ALD) 这衣橱太占地方了。

  2. There isn't much space left for your luggage. (同上) 剩下的地方不大够你放行李的。

  3. That big table takes up too much space in my small kitchen. (CIDE) 那张大桌子占了我小厨房太多的空间。

  4. I did not have the space to store the bricks ... (Cobuild) 我没有地方堆放这些砖块……

有的老师解释说,这里之所以不能选 B,是因为 make 可与 room 搭配,而不能与 space 搭配的缘故。这种解释也是站不住脚的。请看下面的实例:
