有一本英语辨异词典上说,accidentincident 的重要区别,就是“前者是指‘意外的事故’,尤其是不幸的事故”。

根据这种说法,上面的 accident 显然是用错了。是这样吗?

应当记住, accident 有两个常见含义:1. 意外事故(something unpleasant, undesirable, or damaging),traffic accident(交通事故), car accident(车祸)。2. 偶然发生的事(可以是好事,也可以是坏事)。上面的两个例句中的 accident 属于后一用法。

  1. It was just an accident that I found the missing letter. (好事) 我找到了那封丢失了的信,完全是偶然的。

  2. I'm sorry I broke your watch—it was an accident. (坏事) 对不起,我把你的手表弄坏了——不是存心的。

如何区分这三个词?

accident 往往指“偶然的事故”,尤其是不幸的事故:

  1. I had an accident when I was driving to workmy car hit a tree. 我开车上班时出了事故——我的汽车撞在树上了。

  2. There has been a road accident. 发生了一起交通事故。

incident 则是指“不好的或异乎寻常的事件”,可能是大事件,也可能是小事件。

  1. Josie told us about a funny incident at school, when her teacher fell in the pond! 乔西告诉我们一件学校里可笑的事,她的老师掉进池塘里了!

  2. There was a strange incident in the supermarket today. 今天,超级市场里发生了一件怪事。

  3. The July 7th Incident of 1937 is an important one in the history of China. 1937 年的七七事变是中国历史上的一件大事。

event 则是指“重大的历史事件”或日常生活中的重要事件:

  1. social/sporting event 社会重大事件/体育比赛

  2. Hong Kong's return to China is one of the chief events of 1997. 香港回归中国是1997年的大事之一。

  3. That night a terrible event occurred. 那天夜里发生了一件可怕的事。
