有的语法书说, before 只能用于表示时间, 而不能用于表示空间。但是, 我读到这样一个句子: To put the cart before the horse. (Prov) 本末倒置。 请解释。

在现代英语里，在多数情况下，都是用 in front of 来表示空间（见 in front of/in the front of），而用 before 来表示时间。但这绝不是说，before 永远不能用来表示空间。例如：

She knelt before the fire to warm herself. (Bennet) 她跪在火炉前暖和暖和。

I will not have you talking indecently before the children. (Lewis) 我不允许你在孩子们面前说话这么没有体统。
由于 before 既能表示时间关系,又能表示空间关系,因此下面的句子是有歧义的:
They should stand up before me. (before me 可理解为“before I do”，也可理解为“in front of me”)
他们应在我之前站起来。或：他们应在我的前面站起来。
