a room to live/to live in

We need a room to live.

  1. He is not a man to bow before difficulties.

  2. He loves parties; he is always the first to come and the last to leave. (PEG)

  1. Have you anything to declare?

  2. I have letters to write.

  3. New York's a nice place to visit. (《

a pen to write with 一支可写字用的钢笔

a table to write on 一张可写字(用的)桌子

a table to sit down at

an office to work in 一间可以工作的办公室

a stool to sit on 一张可以坐的凳子

a child to look after 一个需要照看的小孩

a nice man to work with 一个好共事的人

Obviously he had nothing else to write with. (Dan Brown, The Da Vinci Code)

a room to live inan office to work in

a place to live in/to live

Because of air pollution being greatly reduced, this city is still ____. A. a good place to live B. lived as good place C. a good place to live in D. living in as a good place(《英语水平考试指南》, p.27) 该书给的唯一正确答案是 C, 不知能否选 A?

在一般情况下人们还是使用 a place to live in

At one time people thought that Minnesota was not a good place to live in.

  1. Night was coming on and I had to look for a place to sleep.

  2. Well, you can certainly afford a decent place to live. (《

  3. I took a bus to Hackney for a new place to walk.

  5. "Can you recommend a good place to eat?" "There are many nice restaurants here ____ Loy's the Old National, etc."

A. like as B. as such C. such as D. as (Michigan)

  1. The place for you to stay is the university guest house. (CGEL)

  2. We went round the town in search of a place to stay.

To offset these advantages, scientists have so far been on the whole unwilling to accept their new status and responsibilities in government.

  1. We can't go. To begin with, it's too cold. Besides, we've no money.

  2. To tell the truth, I was not sorry to be rid of him. (Shaw)

  3. To put it mildly, she's just a bit inquisitive. (Snow)

  4. To be frank with you, I like you, and should be glad to give you any help I can. (Voynich)

属于此类用法的动词不定式还有: to conclude(最后), to be fair(公平而论), to be honest(诚实地说), to be precise(准确地说), to be truthful(诚实地说), to speak candidly(坦率地说), to put it briefly(简而言之)。

They argued that their wage increase would be offset by higher prices. (EED)

You fool, to forget your wedding anniversary!

That box is ____. A. too heavy for me to carry B. too heavy for me to carry it C. very heavy for me to carry D. very heavy for me to carry it

  1. The television in the apartment above was loud enough for us to hear(it). (CGEL)

  2. My ambitions are modest enough for me to fulfil (them). (CGEL)

  3. He was old enough for us to talk to (him) seriously. (CGEL)

active/passive infinitive $^{1}$ (主动不定式/被动不定式)

(1)I have many books to read.

(2) He had nothing to say against Joe.

(3) There are many books to be read.

(4) There's really nothing to be said.

为什么在句(1)和句(2)中用动词不定式的主动形式 to readto say, 而在句(3)和句(4)中却用动词不定式的被动形式 to be readto be said?

R. Quirk 等在 A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language

I've got letters to write tonight. [5]

The animals to be found in Kenya...

  1. You need something to eat. (EGS)

  2. He had nothing to say against Joe. (Galsworthy)

  3. I want a book to read. (EGS)

  4. I asked her if she had any rooms to let. (Wilde)

  5. There being nothing else to do, we went home. (Palmer)

上面各句中的 to eat, to say, to read, to letto do 都是由句子的主语发出的。因此,这里使用 to eat, to say, to read, to let, to do 都是从句子的主语(You, He, I, she, we)的立场来说的,而不是从中心词(something, nothing, a book, rooms)角度来说的,因而,这里不使用 to be eaten, to be saidto be read, to be let, to be done 这种被动形式,便是十分自然的了。

  1. The best thing {todotobedone}\left\{\begin{array}{l} to do \\ to be done \end{array}\right\} is as follows... (CGEL)

  2. Give me a list of the people {toinvite.tobeinvited.}\left\{\begin{array}{l} to invite. \\ to be invited.\end{array}\right\} (CGEL)

  1. There were many things to be done. (Dreiser)

  2. There is only one thing {todo.tobe done.\left\{ \begin{array}{ll} to & do. \\ to & be \text{ done.} \end{array} \right. (MEG)

  3. There is nothing {tofear.tobefeared.\left\{ \begin{array}{l} to fear. \\ to be feared. \end{array} \right. (MEG)

  4. There is a lot {todo.tobe done.\left\{ \begin{array}{ll} to & do. \\ to & be \text{ done.} \end{array} \right. (CGEL)

  5. There was no light to be seen anywhere, and only a few dim stars were shining overhead. (Calduell)

  6. The Biscuit walked to the window, and looked out. There was nothing to see, but he remained there, looking, for some considerable time.

  7. He is the man {tochoose.tobechosen.\left\{\begin{array}{l} to choose. \\ to be chosen.\end{array}\right. (CGEL)

(A) There is nothing to do.

(B) There is nothing to be done about it. (MEG)

在句(A)to do 表示义务(duty),而在句(B)to be done 则表示可能性(possibility)。(参见 let)

The writing is too faint to read. 句中的 to read(主动形式)是否为 to be read(被动形式)之误?

  1. The writing is too faint to read = ... for anyone to read it.

  2. The food is good enough to eat. = ... for anyone to eat it.

active/passive infinitive $^{3}$ (主动不定式/被动不定式)

Can I help you?”“Yes, I have some clothes ____.”

A. to wash B. to be washed C. wash D. be washed

I have some clothes to wash. 同时,句子的主语I与不定式wash又存在着逻辑上的主谓关系,即I wash the clothes。

该书对上题的分析完全背离了该题所提供的语境:“Can I help you?”它表明问话人要向对方提供服务。因此,答话人的回答应当是:“Yes, I have some clothes to be washed.”意思是:有几件衣服由对方来洗,而不是自己来洗。因此,正确答案是 B。关于 active infinitivepassive infinitive 的用法区别,见 infinitive 7^{7}

The water is too hot ____.

A. to drink B. to be drunk C. to be drinked D. for drink

  1. The writing is too faint to read. = ... for anyone to read it. = ... to be read.

  2. The food is good enough to eat. = ... for anyone to eat it. = ... to be eaten.

The food was still too high to be reached.

Charles Babbage is generally considered ____ the first computer. A. to invent B. inventing C. to have invented D. having invented(全国高考,93-34) 对这类试题我总是抓不住要领,常常不知如何着手。

主动关系——选主动形式的动词不定式(to do, to have done, to be doing),被动关系——选被动形式的动词不定式(to be done, to have been done)。 前者发生在后者之前,使用动词不定式的完成形式(to have done, to have been done),前者与后者同时发生或者发生在后者之后,则用动词不定式的一般形式(to do, to be done)。在上面的试题中,invent 的动作发生在 is considered 之前,故应选 C (to have invented)。

  1. He was the first man to fly across the Atlantic (to fly = who flew).

  2. He was the first to be there (to be there = who was there).

  3. They were the last guests to arrive (to arrive = who arrived).

  4. He was one of the first to collect Picasso paintings.

On the other hand, if your language learning has been less than successful, you might do well to try some of the techniques outlined above.

  1. To look at him you could hardly help laughing.

  2. He'd be stupid not to accept that offer.

(2)——What do you think made Mary so upset?her new bicycle. A. As she lost B. Lost C. Losing D. Because of losing(同上,97-13)

试题(1)中的 To get enough...

The chair looks rather hard, but in fact it is very comfortable to ____. A. sit B. sit on C. be sat D. be sat on(全国高考,88-29)

I have many things to do. 其中的 to do 是修饰 many things 的。

The chair is very comfortable. 加上 to sit on,意思就明确了。

But some people don't want good farmland to be built on.

to be built on 是动词不定式的被动语态。

  1. (A)\int (A) Some people don't want good farmland to be built on.

(B)Somepeopledontwantanewplanttobebuilt.\text{ } (B) Some people don't want a new plant to be built.

句(B)中的 a new plant 才是动词不定式 to be built 所表示动作的承受者,而句(A)中的 farmland 只是 to be built on 的状语,或者说是介词 on 的宾语。

  1. (A)\int (\mathrm{A}) a nice place to live in 一个居住的好地方

  2. { (B) a nice place to visit

I can't decide which sweater to buy!

I don't know what to say/who(m) to speak to/which one to buy/when to start out/how to start the motor/where to put my hat/why to go at all/whether to buy it

  1. I couldn't decide which bicycle to buy.

  2. We must decide which one to buy.

  3. Ask him when to open it.

  4. I can't decide where to go for our holidays.

  5. We can't decide whom to invite.

  6. I told her how to find me.

  7. I don't know whether to answer it.

  8. As soon as the reporters know what to write about, they get down to work.

  1. I can't decide which sweater to buy! = I can't decide which sweater I should buy!

  2. I don't know what to say. = I don't know what I should say.

A. 1. How to isolate radioactive elements was discovered by the Curies.

  1. What to do next hasn't been discussed.

B. 1. What I want to know is where to begin.

____ a language requires time and effort. A. Learn B. Learning C. To learn D. Being learned

  1. Seeing is believing.

  2. Rowing keeps you fit.

  3. Refusing invitations is not always easy.

  4. To see is to believe.

  5. To change energy from one form into another is not difficult.

  6. To teach is to learn twice.

  1. To act like that is childish.

  2. To be there is a great pleasure.

  1. To read French is easier than to speak it. \rightarrow It is easier to read French than to speak it.

  2. It seemed a pity to refuse.

  3. It is not always easy to refuse invitations.

  4. She said it was absurd to be afraid.

  5. It was difficult to sell my car.

D. 用动名词作主语时, 虽然也可用 it 作形式主语, 而将作真实主语的动名词置于句末, 但这仅限于有限的句型: 在 It is 之后接有 no use, no good, fun, a wonder, useless, nice, worthwhile, worth one's while, good, interesting, funny, hopeless 等词或短语:

  1. It's no use crying over spilt milk.

  2. It's no good waiting this morning. Come back Monday.

  3. It's not worth your while reading this book, because it isn't accurate.

  2. My favourite pastime is reading.

  5. Real happiness is to be able to avoid doing what one would rather not do.

  1. Our plan is to finish the work next week.

  2. The only thing I could do was to leave.

A. 作使役动词 let, have, make 宾语补足语的动词不定式不带 to:

  1. Her parents won't let her go out with her boyfriend.

  2. Have Smith come and see me.

  3. If you won't do it willingly, I'll make you do it!

She was made to wait for hours.

B. 作感官动词 see, watch, hear, feel, notice, observe 宾语补足语的动词不定式不带 to:

  1. Suddenly I saw a bird fly past the window.

  2. I didn't hear you come in.

  3. I felt something touch my foot.

  4. She noticed him leave exactly at eight o'clock.

  5. The police observed him enter the bank with a shotgun.

He was seen to enter the office.

C. why (not) + 不带 to 的动词不定式(见 why do)

D. had better + 不带 to 的动词不定式(见 had better):

  1. You'd better go now if you want to catch the train.

  2. You had better write to her.

E. would rather (sooner) + 不带 to 的动词不定式:

  1. I would rather go by train than by bus.

  2. I'd rather do it now than later.

  3. I'd sooner go home.

F. cannot but/cannot help but + 不带 to 的动词不定式, 见 can 12^{12}

A. 充当表语的动词不定式, 如果主语部分中含有实义动词 do, 可以省略 to,to (infinitive marker) 1^{1}

B. but, besides, except 之前有实义动词 do 时, 其后的动词不定式可以省略 to,but 11^{11} , except do, to(动词不定式符号) 2^{2}

C. 当几个动词不定式并列时,除第一个动词不定式外,其余的动词不定式有时可以省略 to,to(动词不定式符号) 3^{3}

D. 充当 help 宾语和宾语补足语的动词不定式, 在美国英语中常常省略 to,help sb. to do sth.

What would I not have given to be able to say the rules without a mistake!

  1. You would do well to write more distinctly.

  2. In fact, the nation's first settlers would have been very surprised to see how Americans celebrate Christmas today. (VOA)

  3. He would have given anything to be friends with Rose. (Maugham)

  4. All that I have I would have given gladly not to be standing here today. (B. Clinton, My life)

在你所提问的句子里,动词不定式 to be able to say the rules without a mistake 是表示与过去事实相反的假设。

will, willingness, attempt, promise, decision, determination, inclination, invitation, proposal, refusal, resolution

  1. Any attempt to leave early is against regulations. (CGEL)

  2. We gratefully accepted his promise to help us. (CGEL)

  3. She lost her will to live... (EED)

  4. He made a firm resolution to give up smoking.

  5. His refusal to play the game provoked the other boys.

The film ____ tomorrow is very interesting. A. shown B. to be shown C. being shown D. to show

  1. the man to help you 要去帮助你的那个人

  2. {thecartorepairthecartoberepaired}\left\{\begin{array}{l} the car to repair \\ the car to be repaired \end{array}\right\} (the car that will be repaired)

  3. The case to be investigated tomorrow... ("that will be investigated")

, first $^{4}$ 。

说明

, first 4^{4}

  1. the car being repaired (the car that is being repaired)

  2. The house being built (the house that is being built)

  3. the car repaired (the car that was/has been repaired)

  4. A report written by my colleague appeared last week.

  1. Most of the artists ____ to the party were from South Africa. A. invited B. to invite C. being invited D. had been invited(全国高考,90-29)

By 1992, he hopes to have opened a branch overseas.

  1. He expects/hopes to have finished by June. (= He expects/hopes that he will have finished by June.) (PEG)

  2. You'd better have finished by tomorrow. (OGEG)

infinitive as prepositional complement

What do you like to do besides swim?

  1. He does everything in the house {exceptbut}{putputting}\left\{\begin{array}{l} except \\ but \end{array}\right\}\left\{\begin{array}{l} put \\ putting \end{array}\right\} the children to bed.

  2. They did nothing but complain. (PEG)

  3. She can do everything except cook. (LDCE)

The function of Louis Sullivan's architecture was providing large uninterrupted floor areas A B

and to allow ample light into the interior. (TOEFL) C D

  1. My hobby is swimming.

  2. Her first job had been selling computers.

  3. Seeing is believing.

  4. The only thing that interests him is dancing.

  1. "Did the audience participate in the play?"
"Yes, those actors ____ to involve the audience."
    A. whom it was the function B. of whom the function was
    C. whose function it was D. whose were the function (TOEFL)

  2. The main function of the kidneys is to purify the blood. (FWF)

  3. The function of an adjective is to describe or add to the meaning of a noun. (LDCE)

  4. The function they perform is to maintain the established order of society. (London)
