从上下文来看,省略了的虚拟条件从句不应当是 If you tried to ... 而应当是 If you carried ...。因为 tried to 常常含有试图做而没有做成的意思(参见 try to do/manage to do),而上面的含有 might 的主句的情景是以“你真的把油锅拿出厨房”这个虚拟的条件为前题的。请注意 tried 的含义:
Office workers tried to put out the fire, but it was impossible to control it. 办公室的工作人员曾经试图把火扑灭,但是控制住火势已是不可能的了。
