如同 nice and ..., lovely and ... 结构一样, good and ... 表面上看起来是个并列结构, 实际上, 第一个形容词并不起形容词的作用(也就是说, 它并不做主语的表语), 而起强化语的作用, 加强第二个形容词(或副词) 的语义并给它添加褒义:

  1. I didn't like the speech, but at least it was nice and short. (LDCE) 我不喜欢这个演说，但是它倒是挺简短的。

许多英语语法书都指出, for long 只能用于否定句与疑问句, 为什么上面的 for so long 用在肯定句中了呢?

当 long 受副词(so, very, too, enough)修饰时, for so (very, too, enough) long 也可用于肯定句中:

  1. I apologize for keeping you waiting so long. 我让你等了那么长的时间,我向你道歉。

  2. You've been sleeping too long/long enough. 你睡得太久了[你睡的时间够长了]。

  3. We had worked together for so long ... (Hillary, Living History) 我们一起工作了这么久……(希拉里，《亲历历史》)
