report 是指下级对上级或政府对人民所作的报告。在这个意义上英汉语是一致的。但是，汉语里所说的“形势报告”“学术报告”，却与英语的 report 不对应，而与 lecture 相对应。
在后一情况下应当使用 lecture。例如：

I went to a lecture he gave at the African Institute. (EED) 我去听了他在非洲学院做的报告。

He will deliver four lectures to the students next semester. 他在下学期将向学生作4次报告(讲演)。
