  1. Coal, petroleum and electricity, the important sources of energy, are now being widely used in our country.

  1. An important form of energy is atomic energy, or nuclear energy.

  2. On October 17, 1831, Faraday succeeded in making one of the greatest discoveries in the field of electricitythe electromagnetic induction. (指出 one of the discoveries in the field of electricity 的具体内容) 法拉第于 1831 年 10 月 17 日成功地作出了电学领域中的一项最伟大的发现——电磁感应。

  1. Their(electrons') orbits, or paths, form concentric shells, or layers, somewhat like the layers of an onion.

and in 1931 the Empire State Building was completed, then the tallest building in the world.

then the tallest building in the world

...,(which was) then the tallest building in the world..."

其实,可以把 then the tallest building in the world 看作是 the Empire State Building 的同位语(非限制性同位语)。类例:

Meeting my uncle after all these years was an unforgettable moment, ____ I will always treasure.

A. that B. one C. it D. what(全国高考,02-35)

Land, brains, wealth, technologyin other words everything we need—(is/are) plentiful in our country.

  1. His dinner, eggs and vegetables, is simple. (Eckersley)

  2. Everything we need—land, brains, wealth, technology—is plentiful in our country. (CGE L)

apposition5

As they grow old, people also accumulate belongings for two other reasons, lack of physical and mental energy, both of which are essential in turning out and throwing away, and sentiment. (New Concept English, Book 3, L. 59)

从译文看,似乎译者认为 two other reasons 就是指 lack of physical and mental energy,而把 sentiment 看作是 two other reasons 的并列成分。实际上,lack of physical and mental energysentiment 两者合起来共同做 two other reasons 的同位语。
