suppose1

Suppose you did your homework first.

  1. Just suppose everyone were to give up smoking and drinking. (CGEL)

  2. Suppose her father turned her out of doors! (Wells)

  3. Let's suppose we each had £ 100 to spend—what would we buy with it?

  4. Suppose (that) one of us died. (CGEL)

  1. Suppose he is lost, what would you do?

  2. But let us suppose that the Atlantic Ocean is now regularly crossed by enormous hovercraft. The hovercraft, with a thousand motor-cars on board, moves at 100 miles per hour, and is across the Atlantic in little more than one day.

You won't be here tomorrow, will you?” “I suppose not.

I suppose not 是指“我不这样想”吗?

更详细的情形,见 expect(don't expect so/expect not)

suppose we went/go

ASuppose we go for a swim.

(B) Suppose we went for a swim.

  1. Suppose we have lunch now! (Chambers)

  2. Let us suppose that a child suddenly crosses the road in front of you. (New Concept English, Book 2, L.69)

  3. Suppose you meet me at the post office at half-past seven. (Palmer)

  4. Daddy, can I watch TV?”——“Suppose you did your homework first?”(PEU) “

be supposed to

(1)“Wasn't Joan supposed to be here by now?

"Don't worry, she'll be here ____ twenty minutes."

A. by at least B. around C. nearby D. in about (TOEFL)

(2) “Why can’t you and Bill go to the movies tonight?

"We are ____ a history test tomorrow."

A. supposed to having B. supposedly to have

C. supposed to have D. supposedly to having(TOEFL)

(3) You're supposed to be an expert.

be supposed to 最常见的用法有二。

A. be supposed to 用作半助动词, 其语法特点同 have to, be about to, be bound to, be going to 一样: 其语义相当于 ought toshould, 表示按照规则、规律、义务或约定“应当”“理应”去做某事。

  1. People under eighteen aren't supposed to buy alcoholic drinks.

  2. You're not supposed to know that.

  3. He is supposed to arrive at six o'clock.

  4. The machine is not supposed to make noise. (《

  5. She was supposed to meet me here.

  6. He told this to somebody else, not realizing that he was not supposed to.

  7. The Last Supper is supposed to be thirteen men. Who is this woman? (Dan Brown, The Da Vinci Code) 《

  1. He was supposed to have told me about it.

  2. Mrs. Brown is supposed to have left for Italy last week.

B. be supposed to

  1. You're supposed to be an expert, but you don't know very much about it, do you? (NCE)

  2. Wives tend to believe that their husbands are infinitely resourceful and versatile. Even husbands who can hardly drive a nail in straight are supposed to be born electricians, carpenters, plumbers and mechanics.

  3. On another occasion, he invited a number of important critics to see his private collection of modern paintings. This exhibition received a great deal of attention in the press, for though the pictures were supposed to be the work of famous artists, they had in fact been painted by Dickie. (New Concept English, Book 3, p.80) ……

  4. Everyone went to the funeral, for theghostwas none other than Eric Cox, a third brother who was supposed to have died as a young man.

suppose5

was/were supposed to

You were supposed to die like that. No doctor would have noticed the tiny teeth marks of the snake on your skin . . .”

请问上句中的 were supposed to die 是什么意思?

was/were supposed to

  1. We were supposed to arrive at six. But we are late.

  2. Lucy was supposed to come to lunch. What's happened?

  1. He was supposed to have told me about it.

  2. Mrs. Brown was supposed to have left for Italy last week.

I don't suppose

I don't suppose that he cares, {does he?doesn’t he?\left\{ \begin{array}{l} \text{does he?} \\ \text{doesn't he?} \end{array} \right.

请问在这种句型里是应当用 does he,还是应当用 doesn't he 呢?

I suppose that he does not care.

suppose7

——I haven't heard from Henry for a long time. ——What do you suppose ____ to him? A. was happening B. to happen C. has happened D. had happened(上海高考,97-11) 《英语高考题型解析》(华东理工大学出版社,p.215)对上题作了如下解答:“答案为C。

What do you suppose has happened?

  1. Who do you suppose telephoned today?

  2. Who do you think murdered the lady?

  3. How long do you think you'll be gone?

What ____ would happen if the director knew you felt that way? A. do you suppose B. you suppose C. will you suppose D. you would suppose(全国四级,91.6-67) 答案为 A。

答案为 A。

全句是一个混合疑问句,见 interrogative sentence, think 4^{4}

“主句主语是 you, 谓语动词是 suppose, 因此发生倒装的是 you suppose 这部分, what would happen 相当于 suppose 的宾语从句。”

——What do you think made Mary so upset?

her new bicycle.

A. As she lost B. Lost C. Losing D. Because of losing(上海高考,97-13)(答案为C)因此,我们只能用混合疑问句来解释(见interrogative sentence)

They pointed out the damage which they supposed that had been done by last night's storm.

首先要知道,此题答案是 C(去掉 that)。

  1. They ____ to enter the building by the back door; however, the front door was locked. A. weren't supposed B. wouldn't be supposed C. were supposed D. would be supposed(全国六级,95.1-41)

  2. He's watching TV? He's ____ to be cleaning his room.

A. known B. supposed C. regarded D. considered(全国四级,97.6-37)

Mrs. Brown is supposed ____ for Italy last week. A. to have left B. to be leaving C. to leave D. to have been left(全国四级,90.1-66)

be supposed to have done

要记住:be supposed to have done 有两个含义:(a)本应该做某事而实际上并没有做,见
