too1

LeachAn A-Z of English Grammar and Usage 一书中指出:“too 不能用在句首。”

  1. Too, the customers will find many foreign goods there.

  2. Many births and deaths were not recorded in the parish registers of England and Wales. Too, some of the other denominations kept poor records. (ECD)

  3. She's had her novel published this year; but too, she's written some interesting articles on acupuncture. (CGEL)

Now, however, the music has reached all parts of the States, from Los Angeles in the west to New York in the east. Singers do not just come from the States but from all over the world. There are many famous singers from Britain, Canada and Australia. A lot of them appear on television too.

Her husband spends a lot of money, too.

  1. Her husband, too, spends a lot of money.

  2. Her husband spends a lot of money, too.

  3. Her husband spends a lot of money on dress, too.

  1. I've been to Paris, too.

  1. She likes traveling, too.

  1. He plays the guitar and sings, too.

查《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》(p.1607),副词 too 的意思是“过于”“过度”“太”(to a higher degree than is allowed, desirable or possible)。

Jenny's heart was too loving and forgiving.

  1. Oh, your poodle is too charming.

  2. The little girl was too much interested in Jim's bicycle.

all too, but too, only too

It is all too easy to blame the railway authorities when something does go wrong. (New Concept English, Book 3, L. 37)

我已牢记 too...to do 结构是表示否定的意思。

在一般情况下,too...to do 结构具有否定意义。例如:

He was too excited to say a word.

但是,当 all too, but too, only too, quite too 与动词不定式连用时,就没有否定意义了。

  1. They are all too satisfied to take the opinions of others without the pain of thought for themselves.

  2. Yes, I think you’d better leave off, said Tom, and Alice was only too glad to do so.

  3. I'm only too pleased to help you. (Palmer)

  4. They are but too glad to do so.
