To do is.../It is... to do

To remember this rule is important. It is important to remember this rule.

  1. {To wear a safety belt is compulsory.=It is compulsory to wear a safety belt. (Leech)\left\{ \begin{array}{ll}\text{To wear a safety belt is compulsory.}\\ = \text{It is compulsory to wear a safety belt. (Leech)} \end{array} \right.

  2. That the driver could not control his car was obvious.

  3. {=It was obvious(that)(R.A.Close)\left\{ = \text{It was obvious}(\text{that}) \ldots (\text{R.A.Close}) \right.

That she couldn't even speak to her own sister shocked me.

  1. {=It shocked me... \left\{ = \text{It shocked me... } \right.

The prize has been won by—John.

It's kind of you to say so.

我国英语学界把上面的 it 看作形式主语,而把 of you to say so 看作真实主语。

It is important to remember this rule. \rightarrow To remember this rule is important. 而在上面的句型里, 动词不定式却不能提到句首: ×\times Of you to say so is kind

That's kind of you to say so.

Twenty or thirty pages of information handed to any of the major world powers around the year 1925 would have been sufficient to change the course of world history. It is a strange thought, but I believe a correct one, that twenty or thirty pages of ideas and information would be capable of turning the present-day world upside down, or even destroying it. (New Concept English, Book 4, p. 188)

主句(It is a...)与主语从句(that twenty or...)

It's no good(use)...

____ is no good reading without full understanding. A. Now B. That C. This D. It

  1. It was nice seeing you.

  2. It's no use crying over spilt milk.

  3. It's pleasant lying in the sun. (Lying in the sun is pleasant.)

It's no use to do这种用法看作是典型错误。

It's no use doing = 正确, It's no use to do = 错误。 It's no use doing (It's no use crying over spilt milk. It's no use to do

  1. We've decided that it's no use to worry. (Galsworthy)

  2. It is no use your running away[It is no use for you to run away]. (ELD)

(1) It is no use asking Tod. 和(2) It is no use to ask Tod.

It's no use to do

Haven't I made this clear that you mustn't spit everywhere?

  1. She found it difficult to get along with him.

  2. We thought it no use doing that.

  3. We heard it said that he had gone to Canada.

  1. They consider it their duty to speak to his parents.

  2. This has made it necessary for agriculture and industry to develop very quickly.

  3. Don't you think it wrong wasting your time?

Was the test difficult?” “Not at all, we found ____” A. it very easy for doing. B. very easy to do it. C. it very easy to do. D. it very easy to do it.

C(it very easy to do) 是正确的。

选 C 时,it 是人称代词,代前面的 the test,充当 found 的宾语,而 very easy 是宾语补足语,to do 是形容词的补足语(例如,He is hard to convince. Jack is easy to fool. The bread was hard to bake.)。 这最后的 it 是代 the test 的。

  1. Haywood found it difficult to explain his beliefs to Philip.

  2. Sometimes he found it very hard to like Fellowes.

  3. She soon found it possible to do this regularly.

I hate ____ when people talk with their mouths full. A. it B. that C. these D. them(全国高考,98-8)

我知道答案为 A(it)。

  1. Does it matter if he can't finish the job on time?

  1. It doesn't matter whether you go or not.

  2. It doesn't matter when you arrive.

  3. It has not been decided(on) which flight they will take.

  4. He made it clear why he didn't come on time.

  5. I like it when she kissed me.

  6. I love it when you sing.

  7. I don't like it when you shout at me.

  8. I want to make it clear whether she still loves him or not.

L. G. Alexander 明确指出, it 可以用在 enjoy(享受), hate(恨), like(喜欢), love(爱) 等动词之后充当形式宾语(参见 it 7,8^{7,8} )。

At that moment another young man came into the shop. It was John's old friend Ron.

上句中的 another young man 明明是指人,为什么用 it 来指代他?

it 意味着“这个不认识的人”(the unknown person):

  1. There's a knock at the door. Who is it? It's the milkman.

  2. A tall man stood up and shook hands. It was Captain Lawrie.

  3. It's Dr Stone, isn't it? She's usually good.

Who is it? It's me.

Oh, by the way, there was a telephone call for you.” “Who was it?”

He could see that she had been patient all her life, so that now, after years of it, her lips were set in a gentle and saintly smile.

要注意, 作者已说过: she had been patient all her life, 再说她“忍耐了几年之后”, 显然是说不通的。 语法学家们把这种 it 称作“虚指 it”(empty it) 或“无所指的 it”(nonreferring it)。

  1. I'm sorry for poor Mrs Robinson; she does have a time of it with that drunken husband of hers.

  2. How is it going? (LDCE)

  3. He has had an easy time of it ever since his father died and left him the business.

  4. At last we've made it. (CGEL)

  5. He wants to leave home and go it alone.

  6. I shall stick it out here till he comes. (Galsworthy)

  7. I'm sorry I missed your concert, but I was out of town and couldn't make it. (LDPV)

因此 after years of it 是指“经过几年的艰难生活之后”。

In the debates, Jefferson won the respect of the Congress. He was made Chairman of a committee of five members whose duty it was to draw up a document declaring the colonists' intention to break away from Britain.

如果把定语从句 whose duty it was to draw... It was its duty to draw up a document... Its duty was to draw up a document...

The man whose business it is to look after the children is not here.

(TOEFL) 为什么试题(1)要求用 it(make it possible), 而在试题(2)中却要求取消 it(make possible)?

it is... that(强调句与主语从句的区别)

____ is a fact that English is being accepted as an international language. A. There B. This C. That D. It(全国高考,95-37) 《高中总复习优化设计·英语》(西苑出版社, p. 113) 说上面的试题是个强调句。

但是,它们有一个很重要的区别:强调句去掉 it is...that 之后,句子结构仍然完整,而主语从句却不能这样做(参见 cleft sentence 3^{3} ): (It is) a fact (that) English is being accepted as an international language. 去掉 It is...that 之后,句子是不成立的。 其次,在强调句中,it is A that...

原来 It is... that 是个强调句,而 where 从句和 what 从句是 the ability to do the job 的并列成分。

但是,在口语里,强调句型和存在句型是例外的情况(参见 there is a man lives)。例如:

upon it that

Since his blood pressure is much higher than it should be, his doctor insists upon it that he give up smoking.

如何分析上句中的 upon it that?

see to it that 便属于此种句型。(见 see to it that/see that)。

  1. You may depend upon it that the data are correct.

  2. The operators will answer for it that the test will be reliable.

  3. They are all counting on it that the trial-manufacture will be a success.

(B) He had no doubt of its being highly agreeable to her.

"The genitive is also rare with a pronoun with nonpersonal reference.

I look forward to {it? its }\left\{\begin{array}{l} it \\ ? \text{ its }\end{array}\right\} getting warmer in spring. ”(CGEL,1194)
