一般现在时与现在进行时有一个很重要的区别:前者表“长久性”“习惯性”,后者表“短暂性”。例如,She sings well.是指“她有一副好嗓子”,“她在任何地方唱歌都是好听的”。而 She is singing well.则是指“她现在唱得好听或包括现在在内的某个特定的时间段内唱得好听”,总之,它表达的是“短暂性”,而非永久性。请对比下列实例:

  1. We live in the country. 我们住在农村。(长久居住)

  1. We are living in the country. 我们现在住在农村。(短期居住)

  2. Do you love her? 你爱她吗?

  3. Are you (still) loving her? 你(现在)还爱她吗?

不难看出，上题中的一般现在时 I just help out 是指“长久性的动作”。这是不符合句意的。现在进行时 I am just helping out 则表示“短暂性的动作”——“我暂时帮帮忙”。这正好与句意相符：我并不是真的在这儿工作；我只是在新秘书到来之前暂时帮帮忙。

张道真:《英语语法大全》(外研社,p.424)在解释上面的句子时说“……进行时,以强调现在时刻”。

上面的句子不使用一般现在时,而使用现在进行时是为了“强调现在时刻”吗?

现代英语语法学家,例如 R. Quirk 等,对上述用法的现在进行时作了完全不同的解释。他们举了下面的实例:

  1. I am hoping you will come.

  2. I'm hoping to borrow some money.

并解释说:使用现在进行时的特殊效果,是“使讲话者的态度显得更具有探询性,因而也许更有礼貌。如果换用一般现在时,就会缺少探询性而显得不那么有礼貌:I hope to borrow some money.”(参见 I was hoping)

英语里有些动词,特别是表示位置移动的动词,如 come, go, drive, leave, arrive, 其现在进行时可表示将来时间[参见 leave(v.)2leave(v.)^{2} , come1come^{1} ]。例如:

  1. “Is she coming later?” “She’ll come if she can.” “她晚些时候会来吗?”“如果可能的话,她会来的。”

  2. ‘I've just arrived by train,’ she said. ‘I'm coming to see you.’ “我刚乘火车到达，”她说。“我要去见你。”

  3. I'm leaving tomorrow. 我明天动身。

  4. ‘A new play is coming to “The Globe” soon,’ I said. ‘Will you be seeing it?’ “‘环球剧场’不久将上演一部新剧，您去看吗？”我说。

除了表示位置移动的动词之外,还有不少的动词,其现在进行时不仅仅能表示“此刻正在进行”,而且还可以表示“即将发生的动作”,尤其是按计划、安排发生的动作:

  2. She's getting married this spring. 她订于今年春天结婚。

  3. I'm leaving the university in two years' time. 两年后我就大学毕业了。

被动句中的现在进行时与一般现在时

我选了 C。因为 the rooms 与 paint 是被动关系。

你只注意到了语态,而没有注意到时态。在被动句中,一般现在时可以表达现在完成时的意义,即具有“完成”“结束”的意义。因此,上题中的 are painted = have been painted(已涂过油漆了)。这显然是与句意相矛盾的。再如:

  1. The vegetables are all cut up — what shall I do now? 蔬菜都切好了——现在要我干什么呢？

  2. The window is broken. 窗户(被)打碎了。

而被动句中的现在进行时则表示“此时正在进行”“现在尚未结束”。因此，只有选项D符合句意：“还没有搬家。现在正在油漆房间(呢)。”

请问 is typing 是表“短暂性”，还是表“此刻正在进行”？

现在进行时除了上面提到的用法之外,还有一种用法:重复性。尤其是与 always, constantly, continually, forever, usually 等副词连用时(参见 always 5^{5} ):

  1. I am eating only vegetables and fruits during the summer. 夏天我只吃蔬菜和水果。

  2. I'm always hearing strange stories about him. 我总是听到关于他的一些怪事。

该书在课文注释(p.159)说：“die一般不用现在进行时。此处现在进行时表示‘快要死了’”。

我认为把 are dying 理解为“快要死了”，是与句意相矛盾的。

die 的现在进行时确实可以表示“垂危”“快要死了”的意思：

She's very ill and I'm afraid she's dying. (LDCE) 她病得很重,恐怕快要死了。

但是,上句中的 are dying 却完全不是这个意思,而是强调反复性(天天如此),并增添描写的生动性(每天有 300 人死于吸烟引起的疾病的情景就如同在眼前一样),见上条。

有的语言学家曾经提出，经常用现在进行时表示将来的动词主要有come，go，arrive，leave，stay，wear，do，play，publish等。但是语言材料显示，能这样使用的动词似乎在增多。

在英语里,有些动词的现在进行时可表示被动意义。属于这类动词的有:cook, bake, fry, print, develop, owe, brew, bind, sell, wash, build, beat, complete, fire, 见 notional passives。

  1. The cakes are baking. 蛋糕正在烘着。

  2. The book is binding. 这本书正在装订中。

  3. Oranges are selling cheaply today. 今天桔子卖得很便宜。

  4. A new type of engine is developing. 正在研制一种新型的发动机。
