yours 与 your, hers 与 her 到底有什么区别?

应当牢记,英语的物主代词分两种:形容词性物主代词(或称限定性物主代词)和名词性物主代词(或称独立性物主代词):

A. 形容词性物主代词: my our your his her its their

B. 名词性物主代词: mine ours yours his hers its theirs

还应牢记，形容词性物主代词不能独立使用，必须用在名词之前，而名词性物主代词只能独立使用，绝不可用在名词之前。

That is my bike. 那是我的自行车。
That bike is mine. 那辆自行车是我的。
Are those books mine or yours? 那些书是你的还是我的？
It's not your book — it's hers. 那不是你的书——那是她的。
If you need a bicycle, I'll lend you mine. 如果你需要自行车，我愿意把我的借给你。
She would shut herself up in her room, Julio in his. 她常把自己关在房间里，而朱利奥也是一样。

mine, ours, his, hers, theirs 可用作介词 of 的宾语, 而此种 of 短语充当定语的情形是很常见的:

以上是大著《英语常见问题解答大词典》p.455上的一道试题,答案为B。但我认为上题漏掉了一个名词,如house: There was a big car ____ house.

上面的试题是正确的。答案 in front of his 中的 his 是物主代词的名词性用法。his = his car。你之所以产生这种误解，是因为 his 既可以用作形容词性物主代词，又可以用作名词性物主代词的缘故。因此，应当学会区别 his 的两种用法，见 possessive pronouns $^{1}$ 。
