past perfect tense1

Tom was disappointed that most of the guests ____ when he ____ at the party.

A. left; had arrived B. left; arrived

C. had left; had arrived D. had left; arrived(全国高考)

这就是说,使用过去完成时要有一个过去时间 (T2)\left(\mathrm{T}_{2}\right) 为参照点(不管是否有时间状语表达出来),其动作就是在这个过去时间参照点 (T2)\left(\mathrm{T}_{2}\right) 之前完成的。

这个过去时间参照点常常用时间状语来表达,例如, before, the day before, by five o'clock, by now, by then, by the time ..., before 从句, when 从句等。 T₂ (when he arrived at the party), that

  2. John had left by five o'clock.

  8. We talked and wondered about the people who had lived here before.

  9. Her husband had built up a large business during his lifetime, and when he died ten years ago in 1989 he left all his money to his wife.

past perfect tense2

过去完成时与连词 after, as soon as, when

I told them after you left.

I told them after you left. = I told them after you had left.

再如:

  1. As soon as I got home my brother went out.

  2. As soon as I (had) put the phone down it rang again.

  3. I ate my lunch when Sandra came back from her shopping.

  4. When I put the cat out, it ran off into the bushes in disgust.

past perfect tense 3^{3} (过去完成时)

过去完成时表达未实现的愿望 见 expect 5^{5} , mean 9^{9} , intended to do

John left before we got there.

  1. I slipped out before the lecture started.
  2. They arrived at the station twenty minutes before the train was due. 在火车应到达前 20 分钟他们就到了火车站。 past perfect tense 5^{5} (过去完成时) since 从句中的过去完成时/一般过去时 见 since 3,4^{3,4}

Where on earth have you been? We ____ you back much earlier.

A. are expecting B. were expecting C. expect D. had expected

I hadn't for a minute supposed(expected) that I should get the first prize.

We had only expected twenty people to register for the course, but twice as many showed up on the first day of classes.

例: hope, expect, think, intend, mean, suppose。 They had expected to see the film, but couldn't get tickets.

I did get the first prize(即在我获得头等奖之前未曾料到)。例 2 的过去时间参照点是:showed up(即在 twice as many showed up 之前曾预料)。例 3 的过去时间参照点是:couldn't get(即在未能买到电影票之前曾预料)。

  1. I had expected to be near my objective by now, but everything still seemed alien to me. (New Concept English, Book 3, L. 57)

  2. I had meant to come, but something happened.

  3. I had intended to speak, but time did not permit.

  4. I had hoped to send him a telegram to congratulate him on his marriage, but I didn't manage it. (LEG)

  5. Langdon nodded but still felt circumspect. He had wanted to bring the London police with them, but Sophie's fears of who might be involved put a damper on any contact with the authorities. (Dan Brown, The Da Vinci Code)
