subjunctive mood2

The electronic computer performs calculations quickly and accurately.

Allow the water to cool for ten minutes and then take the temperature.

If there were no air, there would be no life on the earth.

在汉语里,动词是没有虚拟语气的,因此中国学生常常感到英语的虚拟语气很难理解和掌握。我们应当下功夫对英语动词的虚拟语气进行比较深入的学习和研究,以期把误解和误译减少到最低限度,更详细的情形,请见 subjunctive mood 6^{6}

In the absence of friction, belts ____ in conveying power from one machine to another. A. will not be used B. may not be used C. can not be used D. could not be used

D(could not be used)。

in the absence of friction

If he had any money, he'd leave home.

  1. It would be nice if they were here now.

  2. If they were alive, they would be moving around.

  3. If I were you I'd start packing now. (PEU)

  4. It would be nice if it were a holiday tomorrow.

  5. If you went at about five o'clock tomorrow you could see him before he left the office. (PEU)

  6. If she tried harder next time, she would pass the examination. (CGEL)

(4) If I had had any sense, I would have kept quiet about it. (LEG)

(5) If we had gone by car, we would have saved time. (LEG)

(6) If the whole operation ____ beforehand, a great deal of time and money would have been lost. A. was not planned B. has not been planned C. had not been planned D. were not planned(全国四级,99.6-43)

subjunctive mood6

If I had married her, I would have been unhappy. (The Structure of Technical English, p. 140)

(Sentences of

Real Condition) 和非真实条件句(Sentences of Unreal Condition)两类。

  1. If we apply heat to ice, the motion of the molecules is speeded up, and the ice becomes water.

  2. In other words, if there were no attraction, the electron would fly away from the proton in a straight line.

  1. If light could of itself pass round an object, there would be no shadows.

  2. If transparent bodies did not reflect a certain amount of light, they would be invisible.

  3. If I mentioned everybody who has impressed, inspired, taught, influenced and helped me along the way, this book would be several volumes long.

  1. If electronic computers had not been invented, many problems on space flight could not have been solved.

  2. If the bearings had not been lubricated, they would have overheated by now.

  3. If you had known the fundamental laws, you would have come to the correct conclusion.

  4. There is no doubt that if she had not lost her rudder she would have won the race easily. (NCE 3, L. 25)

  5. If he had found the dot, he would have removed it and tried to run. (Dan Brown, The Da Vinci Code)

  6. I used to joke with Hillary that if my father hadn't lost his life on that rainy Missouri highway, I would have grown up a few miles from her and we probably never would have met. (B. Clinton, My Life)

  7. If thicknesses had not been looking over his shoulder as he entered, Harry would not have had time to pull the Invisibility Cloak over himself. (J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows)

  1. This is very much like the combination of forces that are set into motion when you whirl a ball on the end of a piece of string. If the string should break, the ball would fly away from your hand.

  2. If green plants should disappear some day, there would hardly be any life on the earth.

  3. If the reaction were to take place, large amount of energy would be released.

  1. Come what may, we will go ahead with our plan. (CGEL)

  2. Say what he will, in his heart he knows that he is wrong. (Wood)

I wish (that) someone had let me know.

  1. I wish they were not so late. (=I feel it is a pity that they are so late.)

  2. I wish I remembered the address.

  3. I wish I spoke English fluently.

  1. I wish I had that kind of power. (Dan Brown, The Da Vinci Code)

  1. I wish she had not left. (I am sorry that she has left.)

  2. I wish that John had agreed.

  3. I wish you hadn't spent so much money.

I wish it would rain tomorrow.

I wish that someone had let me know.

If increased production of electricity by nuclear reactors... enables it to remain economical... we may soon reach the crossover point for hydrogen... The second attractive use of hydrogen would be to produce electricity by fuel-cell conversion.

  1. The crew's deaths would have been less likely in peacetime because the crew could have radioed their position. (Reading Laboratory, IIIb, Book 6, p. 15)

  2. A list of all the ways in which diesel power is used would take pages, and engineers keep finding new uses for these engines.

这里应当首先指出,除了 if, unless, in case, as long as, suppose (supposing), on condition that, provided that, even though 能引出非真实的条件之外,英语里还有许许多多其它语言手段能够表达非真实的情况,即所谓“假想”的情况。

  1. Without steel, there would be no industry.

  2. But for friction, people could neither walk, nor even stand up.

  3. She would leave her husband except for the children.

  4. Because of his arguments he was convinced that friction provided the forces, which stop bodies in horizontal motion, and that in the absence of all forces the bodies would continue to move forever.

  5. They could have achieved more under better conditions.

  6. Man's life would be impossible in a world free from friction.

  1. But for John, they would all have died. (CGEL)

  2. Except for John, they would all have died. (CGEL)

  3. In a better world, this sort of conversation between a husband and wife would be no one's business but our own. (Hillary, Living History)

If there were no friction, people could neither walk, nor even stand up.

The weight of the body, the earth pull on it, depends on the location of the body on the earth and of course would be quite different on another planet.

(would...

原文中的介词短语 on another planet 表示的是一种假想的情况,因为该物体(the body)并没有真的放到另一个行星上,因此,on another planet 相当于 if it were on another planet

It should be noted that a rocket does not depend on the atmosphere for its propulsion, but would actually perform better in the absence of an atmosphere because of lessened air resistance.

Without air, there would be no wind or clouds. There would be no weather, as we know it. The night time would be very cold and the days very hot. We would be forced to seek shelter from the sun, as there would be no atmosphere to protect us from the sun's deadly rays.

  1. Aware of the fact that it would be impossible to wait thousands or millions of years to receive an answer from a distant planet, scientists engaged in Project Ozma are concentrating their attention on stars which are relatively close.

  2. It would be wrong not to take a thorough study and investigation before the planning and designing. (动词不定式短 not to take... designing 所表达的事情,是想象的)

  3. In industry, for example, television cameras are used to watch processes in places, where it would be difficult or even dangerous for a human to be present.

  4. The molecules of water are incredibly minute. It would take about 125 million of them to form a row an inch long.

  5. It would be a mistake to think that a quick elementary study of physics can explain the path of a jet plane in the sky, or the intricate rhythms of a diesel engine. (作者把 to think...

  6. It would be unwise for you to marry him. (= if you were to marry him.)

It would be foolish, not to say mad, to sell your car. (LDCE)

  1. You would do well to write more distinctly.

  2. When I was a teenager, I felt that I was just young and uncertain—that I was a new boy in a huge school, and I would have been very pleased to be regarded as something so interesting as a problem. (to be regarded...

  3. To be launched in a rocket you would have to lie down.

  4. In the Union of South Africa it is very difficult for a native to get a skilled job. To qualify for such a position, the native would first have to receive specialized training, and this is prohibited.

  1. The list of discoveries by accident could fill a long book; and remember, most of them happened when somebody asked himself: "why?"

  2. Physicists have a strong wish for a simple but sound theory that would explain the ultimate physical make-up of matter.

  3. For this reason, intelligent creatures in any part of the universe would be able to understand a simple arithmetical sequence. They would be able to reply to our signals using similar methods. (迄今尚未证明其它星球存在有智慧的生命,因此 intelligent creatures in any (other) part of the universe 仅仅是假定其存在的东西)

  4. For several years the author has felt in his teaching the need for a book which would provide a thorough and rigorous introduction to college physics for students who intend to pursue scientific careers.

  5. There is no necessity to destroy the basic word stock when it can be effectively used through the course of several historical periods, not to speak of the fact that, it being impossible to create a new basic word stock in a short time, the destruction of the basic word stock accumulated in the course of centuries would result in paralysis of the language, in the complete disruption of intercourse between people. (《马克思主义和语言学问题》,人民出版社)(the destruction...

  6. Imagine the effect on a reasonable advanced technological society, one that still does not possess the bomb, of making it aware of the possibility, of supplying sufficient details to enable the thing to be constructed. Twenty or thirty pages of information handed to any of the major world powers around the year 1925 would have been sufficient to change the course of world history. (Twenty or thirty pages of information...

  7. The ideal machine which would have an efficiency of 100%100\% should not have any friction.

  8. ... he was prepared to prove his theory that two different weights, dropped simultaneously from the same height, would fall to ground at the same time. (College English, Book 3, p. 54) ……

subjunctive mood10

Five minutes earlier, ____ we could have caught the last train. A. or B. but C. and D. so 答案为 C。

Five minutes calier 表达的是一个与过去事实相反的假设(如果早来 5 分钟的话——事实上并没早来 5 分钟)。and ... 分句则表达在此反事实的假设条件下可能发生了的事件。参见 and 11^{11}

____ it rain tomorrow, we would have to put off the visit to the Yangpu Bridge. A. Were B. Should C. Would D. Will(上海高考,94-25)

It would be foolish, not to say mad, to sell your car. (LDCE)

原文的虚拟语气(would be)告诉我们:to sell your car 只是一种假设情况。

It is hard for me to imagine what I would be doing today if I ____ in love, at the age of seven, with the Melinda Cox Library in my hometown. A. wouldn't have fallen B. had not fallen C. should fall D. were to fall(上海高考,02-37)

答案为 B, 但是, had not fallen 为过去完成时, 而前面的分句用的却是 would be doing。 我认为应改为 would have done

在上面的句子里,had not fallen 表示与过去事实相反,而 would be doing 表示与现在事实相反,见 conditional sentences of mixed time

It would be nice if you helped me a bit with the housework.

subjective mood 16^{16}

and explained that your parents had been ill at the time.

因此,应将 had been 改为 were。

I would have gone to visit him in the hospital had it been at all possible, but I ____ fully occupied the whole of last week.

A. were B. had been C. have been D. was(全国研考,97-4)
