very/much1

aShe works much hard.

(b) That was a very easier job.

  1. Vesta was very ill. (Dreiser)

  2. The job was very easy. (CGEL)

  3. I was much annoyed. (OSD)

  4. In person, Rita Skeeter is much warmer and softer than her famously ferocious quill-portraits might suggest. (J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows)

  5. I wasn't much surprised.

  6. Byron is much admired in Greece. (LEG)

  7. This is much the best. (Palmer)

  8. We were very much surprised when the snake charmer suddenly began to play jazz tunes and popular modern songs. (New Concept English, Book 2, L.42)

  1. We are all very excited and are looking forward to the Olympic Games because they have never been held before in this country.

  2. I suddenly felt very worried, but could not say anything. (New Concept English, Book 2, L.48)

  3. You make me very ashamed in front of him.

  4. Mrs Ramsay got very worried. (New Concept English, Book 3, L. 19)

This is a very interesting book.

× His views were very alarming his audience.

His views were very alarming." (CGEL)

CGEL(§ 17.98)说它已经完全形容词化。He is interesting.(他很有趣)。

  1. When the hotel was reached her condition was still more alarming. (Mis)

  2. The idea was so exciting. (Mansfield)

  3. You are very frightening. (CGEL)

  4. Doubtless he had not meant to offend me, but the tone of his remarks was certainly insulting.

  5. Those chocolates are very tempting. (Neal)

  6. What you've just told me is very surprising. (Maugham)

  7. She has a very interesting mind. (CGEL)

She is very calculating.

  1. {She is calculating our salaries. (现在分词)(CGEL)\left\{\text{She is calculating our salaries.

(a) I was very touched by his sincerity.

(b) We were very pleased by his behaviour.

The man was very offended by the policeman."

  1. I'm very disturbed by your attitude.

  2. We were all very shocked by the news about Tony. (Swan)

  3. I was very amused by Miranda's attitude.

AsA\frac{\mathrm{As}}{\mathrm{A}} the nation's first president, George Washington still enjoys a very unparalleled place BC\frac{\mathrm{B}}{\mathrm{C}}

in American history.

  1. The man was very offended. (CGEL)

  2. I was very touched... (Clark)

  3. We are all very excited... (NCE 2, L. 37)

例如,ashamed, amazed, bored, delighted, frightened, relieved, excited, shocked, unexpected, talented, disturbed, pleased 等等。

举例来说,下列形容词就不能由 very 来修饰:absolute, asleep, awake, complete, entire,perfect, infinite, total, unique, unwritten, unbroken。同样,unparalleled(无双的,独一无二的,独特的,无与伦比的)也是个不分等级的形容词,因此,它也不能接受 very 的修饰。
