that 和 so that 都能引导目的状语从句,不知它们的区别何在?
由 that 引导的目的状语从句属正式语体,带有古语体的痕迹。
Christ died, that we might live. (CGEL) 耶稣死了,为的是让我们活着。
Man does not live that he may eat, but eats that he may live. 人不是为了吃饭而活着，而是为了活着而吃饭。
Let us fight on, that the light of justice and freedom may not die in our land. (CGEL) 让我们继续战斗下去，以便正义和自由的光芒不会在我们的国土上消失。

下面一段话引自《朗文英语正误词典》(安徽科技出版社,p.406,上海译文出版社,p.331)
“× He closed the door quietly that nobody would hear him. √ He closed the door quietly so that nobody would hear him.
说明:用 so that 表示目的,单独 that 不行(p.406)。”但是,我却读到过这样的句子:She did it that he might go free.(MED)这不是表明 that 可以引出目的状语从句吗?
说 that 绝对不能引出目的状语从句, 是不准确的。但是 that 引出目的状语从句, 显得异常正式, 因此用得比较少。但也不是绝无仅有:
I tell you this that you may not shrink from the responsibility. (Yeats) 我把这事告诉你,让你不要推卸责任。
Bring it closer that I may see it better. (LDCE) 把它拿近一些,好让我看清楚点。
They have died that liberty might live. 他们死了,为的是自由能够存在。请做下面的英语试题:
"This is an interesting Picasso painting." "Would you please hold it up ____ it?"
