在 as such 结构中, as 是介词, 作“作为”解, such 是代词, 作“像这样的人或物”解。as such 的最常用意义是: “以这样的资格或身份”。例如:

Physics can be defined simply as the study of matter and motion. As such, it is the science that is most basically concerned with uncovering the laws that govern the action of the material world.

[原译]简单地说,物理学是一门研究物质和运动的科学,就这点而论,这门科学最为关注的基本问题是揭示支配物质世界活动的规律。(上海交大编写《大学英语》,第四册,第7课)

原译把 as such 译作“就这点而论”似乎欠通。但查英汉词典，也只有“以这种身份（资格、名义）”“就这点而论”“本身”等译法，好像都对不上号。

as such 还有一种未被我国英汉词典收入的用法和含义:位于分句之首,起承上启下的作用,可译为“因此”“因而”。

  1. A simple governor is dependent on gravity; as such it must be kept vertical. 简单的调速器是依靠重力的作用,因此,它必须保持垂直。

  2. The earth is a conductor of electricity and as such may form part of electrical circuit. 地球是导电体, 因而可能构成电路的一部分。

  3. He is the master and as such must be obeyed. (Palmer) 他是主人, 所以必须服从他。

  4. He is my father and as such can tell me what to do. (ELD) 他是我父亲,所以他能够告诉我该做什么。
