on the wall/in the wall

on 是指“在……的(表面)上”，而 window 是不可能在墙的表面上的，故 a window on the wall 的说法是不恰当的，应改为 in the wall(在墙内)(参见 in/on $^{1}$ )。与下面的句子作一对比，便可明白这一点：

1. Your book is on the table. 你的书在桌子上。

2. There is a picture/map on the wall. 墙上有一幅画/一张地图。

初中英语教科书之所以出现那样的错误,是因为英汉两种语言在使用介词方面存在着差异的缘故。汉语可以说“墙上的窗户”,英语却要说“a window in the wall”。再如:

1. 报纸上的图片→a picture in the newspaper

2. 图片上的动物 $\rightarrow$ animals in the picture

3. 植物并非全都长在地上 $\rightarrow$ Not all vegetation grows in the ground.

4. 墙上的洞→A pale light came through the hole in the wall. 一道微弱的灯光从墙上的一个小孔里透过来。
