the couple 作主语时,为什么它的谓语动词有时用复数,有时用单数?
当 couple 作“(夫妇)两个人”解时,它的谓语动词应当使用复数:
The couple were sitting just behind me. 这对夫妇就坐在我的后面。
当 couple 表示若干对中的一对, 即表示一个单位时, 则其谓语动词应当使用单数:
Each couple was asked to complete a form. 要求每对夫妇填一张表。
And tonight's winning couple is George and Dorothy Lightfoot. 今晚获胜的一对是乔治和多萝西·莱特福特。

a couple of 到底是“一对”“一双”，还是指“若干”“几个”“两三个”？
a couple of 具有两种不同的含义: (a) “一对” “一双”, 如 a couple of players(一对选手);
(b)“几个”“若干”，例如：
We walked a couple of miles. (MD) 我们走了几英里。

couple 和 pair 在数量上都表示“二”。a couple of 与 a pair of 意思是否相同？
a pair of 虽然在数量上表示“二”。但是一定是配对的东西（一对，一双），如 a pair of shoes（一双鞋），a pair of glasses（一副眼镜）等。而 a couple of 不一定是配对的东西。下面的实例表现了 a pair 与 a couple 词义上的差别：
Not every couple is a pair. 成双未必能配对。
然而,两者都可以表示“一对夫妇”“关系密切的两个人”: a happy pair(couple)。
有时，a couple of 不一定是指“两个”，而可能是指“几个”。如 a couple of tickets（几张票），a couple of months（几个月）。
