set + 宾语 + to do 这个句型表示有意识的活动，即有意识地叫（指定）某人去做某事（A）。而 set + 宾语 + v-ing 表示“使某人或某事处于某种状态”，它既可表示有意识的活动（B），亦可表示无意识的活动（C）：

A. 1. I've set myself(ie resolved) to finish the job by the end of the month. 我决心在月底以前完成那个工作。

He then set them to write reports on what they'd done. 他然后又指定他们就所做的工作写出报告。

B. 1. He set the machine going with a push. 他推了一下闸，使机器开动起来。

C. 1. The sudden noise set the dog barking. 这突然的声响惊得狗汪汪叫起来。

set off(for)与set out(for)都可表示“动身(赴)……”。可把它们看作是同义表达手段。请看下面实例：

He set off for work an hour ago, hasn't he arrived? 他一小时前就上班去了,还没有到吗?
He set out for work an hour ago, hasn't he arrived? 他在一个小时前就上班去了,还没有到吗?
They set out [off] at six and hoped to arrive before dark. 他们六点钟动身,希望天黑前到达。

正确的用法是 set off for (set out for, leave for, head for)。for 表示预定的目的地：

Having said farewell to their friends, they set off for home. 他们向朋友们道了别，便动身回家了。
They set out[off] for Rome. 他们动身去了罗马。
