than

原书 PDF 第 1516—1519

than1

To compensate for his unpleasant experiences in hospital, the man drank a little more than was good for him. (New Concept English, Book 3, L.29)

  1. You spent more money than was intended to be spent. (CGEL)

  2. That morning we drank more tea than had been our custom.

  3. More middle-aged persons suffer from heart trouble than is generally realized. (Wood)

  4. This is more money than is needed.

  5. You seem to take keener interest in the subject than has ever been shown before.

  6. The town offers better cultural advantage than has been generally supposed.

但是,也有人解释说,在此类句子里,than 从句中省略了主语 it(即把 than 看作是连词,而不是关系代词):

There were more casualties than was reported.

There were more casualties than it was reported there were. (Wood)

  1. I don't think this is any better than was ordered.

  2. The really serious cases are fewer than has been suggested. (Wood)

He smoked fewer cigarettes than were normally available.

Given that this work was produced under particularly difficult circumstances, the result is better than could be expected. (CGEL, p. 905)

  1. He smoked fewer cigarettes than were normally available. (GCE, p. 686)

  2. You spent more money than was intended to be spent. (CGEL, p. 1131)

  1. You spent the money that was intended.

  2. She is extremely popular among students, as is common knowledge. (CGEL, p. 1116).

"How embarrassing we are nowadays!" "The next war will be more cruel ____ can be imagined." A. that B. than it C. which D. than

There ought to be less anxiety over the perceived risk of getting cancer than ____ in the public mind today.

A. exists B. exist C. existing D. existed(全国研考,95-2)

答案为 A(exists)。

More middle-aged persons suffer from heart trouble than ____ realized. A. generally B. most people C. what people D. is generally 《英语考试向导》2000年第1期问题解答栏的解答者对上面的试题作了如下解答:“我认为此题的最佳答案是A。”

Robert did more work than was intended.

A 时, than 用作连词, 其后省略了主语 it 和助动词 is。类例:

  1. You arrived earlier than (it was) necessary.

  2. If you go to Xi'an, you will find the palaces there more magnificent than commonly supposed.

The Chinese eat less sugar than many other countries in the world.

The Chinese eat less sugar than people of many other countries in the world. 参见any 2,3,4^{2,3,4} 。

The population of China is larger than the United States. (应为 than that of the United States) 请做下面的英语试题:

The cost of living in Shanghai is still higher than any other city in China.

These proposals sought to place greater restrictions on the use and copying of digital information than ____ in traditional media. A. exist B. exists C. existing D. to exist(全国研考,99-10)

  1. He often sat in a small bar drinking considerably more than _. A. he was in good health B. his health was good

than did it 1480 C. his good health D. was good for his health(全国六级,95.6-52)

  1. The project requires more labor than ____ because it is extremely difficult. A. has been put in B. have been put in C. being put in D. to be put in(全国研考,92-28)
