应当牢牢记住: scarcely 是否定词, 应将它理解为“几乎不”, 而不要理解为“几乎”。由于 scarcely 具有否定意义, 因此, 在否定句中 scarcely 不能与其他否定词 no, not, none, nothing 连用:

  1. He scarcely knew a word of English. 他几乎连一个英语单词都不认识。

  2. I scarcely believed my eyes. 我几乎不敢相信我的眼睛。

由于含有 scarcely 的句子是否定句,所以应当选 C(anything)(参见 hardly 1^{1} )。

除 little 以外, 英语里表示半否定意义的词还有: barely、hardly、rarely、scarcely、seldom、few 等等。

  1. I can barely understand him. 我几乎不能理解他(说的话)。

  7. Einstein seldom wore strange clothes, nor was he a cruel man. 爱因斯坦很少穿奇怪的服装，他也不是一个冷酷的人。
  8. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. 我们在这里所说的话，世人不大会注意，也不会长久记住，但是英雄们在这里的行动却永远不会被人遗忘。 第二,上列句式后面的反意问句应当用肯定式。例如: He was hardly nine when his mother died, was he? 他母亲死的时候，他差不多还不到九岁，是不是？ 第三,在这种句式中可以包括非断定形式的词 any, anything, anybody 等等,而不能使用断定形式的词 some、something 等等。例如: She hardly eats anything. 她几乎不吃任何东西。 因此，R.A.克劳斯把这类句子看作是与用not,never构成的否定句一样的否定句： I have {notneverhardlyscarcelyseldomrarely}\left\{\begin{array}{l}not\\ never\\ hardly\\ scarcely\\ seldom\\ rarely\end{array}\right\} spoken to George's sister. ②

但是,有些语言学家,为了概念准确起见,把这类句子叫做半否定句,以区别于完全否定句。这是颇有道理的,因为在这类半否定句之后,为了使说的话的意思更加准确,还可以进一步采用完全否定句。例如:

  1. I can hardly ignore his views; in fact I can't ignore his views. 我几乎不能忽视他的观点；事实上，我不能忽视他的观点。
  2. Peter read little or nothing in summer vacation. 彼得在暑假中很少或者简直没有阅读什么东西。 scarcely/rarely 见 rarely/scarcely scarcely did we 见 Never did we scarcely ever 见 hardly ever
