我们在plural条中已经指出，复合名词的第一个成分为中心词时，构成复数形式的方法，是把第一个成分变为复数，例如：mother-in-law $\longrightarrow$ mothers-in-law stander-by $\longrightarrow$ standers-by passer-by $\longrightarrow$ passers-by但是，它们构成属格的方法，却不是在第一个中心词上加's，而是在合成词的末尾加's。例如：stander-by $\longrightarrow$ stander-by's passer-by $\longrightarrow$ passer-by's mother-in-law $\longrightarrow$ mother-in-law's somebody else $\longrightarrow$ somebody else's(book)(参见grown-ups/mothers-in-law)
