no less than

“不少于”意味着“可能多于”，“不止”则意味着“多于”，总之，在汉语里，这两个短语是表示概略数目的。其实，no less than 并不是用来表示概略数目的，而是用来表达精确数目的。它的作用仅仅在于表达说话人“言其多”的口气，可译为“多达”“高达”，相当于 as much as, as high as, as many as。它是 no more than①(仅仅，才)的反义词。no less than three 不是“不少于3”，也不是“不止3”，而是恰好等于“3”。关于这一点，有的英英辞典作了精确的释义。He won no less than £ 50 in the lottery. (expressing surprise at the amount) (LDCE)（他中了高达50英镑的奖券。)在这个句子里 no less than£ 50决不可能表示概略数目）。

下面的例句更足以证明这一点：

1. He paid no less than £ 10,000 for it. 他为此支付的款项高达一万英镑。

2. Its estimated population is no less than 182,000. 估计人口多达 182,000 人。

3. No less than three people offered to buy it. 出价买此物的有 3 人之多。

4. They have designed no less than six kinds of lathes. 他们设计的车床竟达6种之多。

上面的误译可能是由于没有搞清楚 no 与 not 的区别。not less than 没有“言其多”的口气，只是客观地表达“不少于”的意思。“不少于”当然有可能“多于”（perhaps more）。

There were not less than ten thousand visitors at the exhibit that day.

那天去看展览的观众不少于一万人。（没有表达说话人“言其多”或“言其少”的语气，也就是说，说话人对此数量没有感到惊讶）。

首先要明确,原文“一千元奖券”中的“一千元”是个精确的数字,而不是个概略数字。英文的 no less than 恰好是表达精确数字的,并附带有“言其多”(居然)的口气。因此,句(1)是符合中文原意的。而英文的 not less than 不能表达精确的数字,只能表达概略数字(“不少于 1 000”可以理解为“1 000 以上”,况且没有“言其多”的口气,因而没有把“居然”的含义表达出来(参见 no fewer than, no more than)。故句(2)是不符合原意的。请对比:

1. No less than a thousand people came. (=It was surprising that there were so many.) 来的人竟然有一千人之多。

2. There were not less than (= at least) a thousand people there. 那里至少有一千人。

3. The salary for that job will be not less than £ 1 000. 那个工作年的年薪不会少于一千英镑。

该书对 no less than + 数词的解释是对这一结构的误解。这显然是受了我国出版的某些英汉词典译法(“不少于”“不止”)的影响。但是,请注意,英美出版的英英词典对这一结构的释义却是非常明确的:

1. No less than draws attention to the surprising largeness of an amount. (CEED) (no less than 用以引起人们对惊人的数量之大的注意。)
2. (no less than) used to emphasize a surprisingly large amount. (NODE) (no less than 用来强调惊人的数量之大。) 由此可见, no less than 并不是用来表达概略数目的, 而是用来表达精确数目的, 并且具有“言其多”的口气。因此, 用在上面的试题里是完全正确的, 只是与 no more than 所表达的“言其少(小、低)”的口气恰好相反(参见 no less than $^{1}$ )。 [句意]D：他才15岁。 C: 他都 15 岁了(他竟然长到 15 岁了)。
