last 与 final 都作“最后的”解, 它们有无区别呢?
last 强调顺序上的“最后的”，有时则是指“上一个的”，而 final 除含有“最后的”这一含义之外，还强调事物的“结束”或“终了”。由于它们词义上的这种差别，它们的搭配关系常常是不同的：
——How was your recent visit to Qingdao? ——It was great. We visited some friends, and spent the ____ days at the seaside.
last week/the last week
He has been absent with a cold for the last week.
last 是指“过去的”“先前的”，它怎么能与现在完成时连用呢？
last week 是指“上一周”“上星期”，但是，the last week (month, year) 有时则是指“从现在算起的最近一周(月,年)”，这就是说，这些短语所指的时间包括现在在内（例如，说话的时间是2001年10月10日，the last week 就是指2001年10月3日至10月10日，the last month 就是2001年9月至10月10日），因此，它们与现在完成时连用，是完全合理的（参见 present perfect tense ）。
He's lived here for the last few years. 最近几年他住在这里。
My wife's been in Europe for the last ten months. 最近10个月我妻子在欧洲。
It shows what has happened to the forests of the USA in the last 350 years. 它表明在最近350年来美国森林所发生的情况。
the last ... to do
（A）He is the last to arrive.
(B) He is the last person to tell a lie.
这两个句子是否可译为：
(A)他是最后到达的。

句(A)的译文是对的,而句(B)的译文却是错的。要知道,last除作“最后的”解之外,还有一个常被初学者忽略的含义:“最不可能的”“最不适合的”“最不希望的”(least likely,suitable, willing, desirable)。EED 通俗地解释说: You can use last to emphasize that you do not want to do something or that something is unlikely to happen or be true. (你可以使用 last 来强调你不愿意做某事或强调某事不可能发生或不可能是真的。)
She's the last person to trust with a secret. 她是最不可能保密的人。
He would be the last man to say such things. 他绝不会说这种话。
She should be the last one to blame. 她绝不应当受责备。

I seem to remember that the last time we met I did most of the talking, so perhaps I should let you do the talking this time.
如何分析句中的 the last time?
从结构上看,the last time (that) 后跟的是一个定语从句。因此,有一派英语语法学家,如 R. Quirk 等人把上面的结构分析为名词短语 + 定语从句 (the last time we met) 作句子谓语 (did) 的时间状语;另一派英语语法学家则干脆把 the last time (every time, each time, the moment 等) 看作是从属连词,引导时间状语从句 (参见 first , every time, each time, moment )。本书采用了后一种分析方法。
He was much better the last time I saw him. 我上次看见他时，他好多了。
The last time I saw her, she was picking cotton in the field. 上一次我看见她时，她正在地里摘棉花。
in the last two years 与现在完成时
In the last two years he ____ (sell) millions of records. 这里要求填 has sold, 我至今不解。last 的意思是“过去的”, 为什么 in the last two years (在过去的两年里) 要与现在完成时连用, 而不能与过去时连用呢?
首先应当弄清楚, in the last two years 中的 last 并不是指“过去的”, 而是指“最近的”, 而 in the last (past) two years 这个短语通常不是表示过去的时间状语, 而是包括现在在内的时间状语, 因此可译为“近两年来”。这样, 它与动词的现在完成时连用, 就是理所当然的了:
In Britain, sales of cigarettes have been reduced by 30% in the last ten years. 最近十年来，英国的香烟销售量下降了 30%。
