原书 PDF 第 1645—1647

was/were to do1

(1)He was to regret this decision.

(2) In the next ten years they were to work together in the same unit.

(3) This plan, however, was to be altered later.

(4) The meeting was to be held the following week.

请问 was/were to do 这个结构的意义和用法。

应当指出,半助动词 be to 的一般过去时(was/were to)有时候具有纯过去将来时的意义(a pure future-in-the-past meaning)。在这种情况下,was/were to + infinitive 相当于 would + infinitive。

  1. Thirty years later, this precocious youth was to be the first President of the United States.

  2. This I was only to learn later.

  3. My teacher was later to become the greatest historian of American relations with China.

  4. In 1642 a boy was born in England who was to become one of the greatest scientists in the history of the world.

  5. But more important than the particular value of any new fruit or vegetable were the lessons, the practical teachings, that were soon to be practiced by hundreds of plant researchers around the world.

  6. I first met him in 1952. I was not to meet him again for 16 years.

was/were to do2

(1)On his return to India he had the chance to travel to South Africa to work on a law case. This experience was to change his life.

was to change 是一个‘be + 不定式’的结构。

(2) Cook was to be in charge of this expedition as captain of the ship Endeavour. (SEFC,3, p.8)

be to do sth.

They are to be married in June.

We were to take a journey round the world last year, but at the last minute I changed my mind.

读了上面的注解我仍然没有弄明白句(1)中 was to change 以及句(2)中 was to be 的真正含义。

应当明确指出,上述两书的解释把 was/were to 这一特殊用法与 be to 的一般用法混为一谈了,因而干扰了读者对 was to changewas to be 的正确理解。

事实上,上面两例中的 was to changewas to be in charge 均具有纯过去将来时的含义,见上条。

(2) Those first words were to change my world. (SEFC,3,p.97)

(3) Cook was to be in charge of this expedition as captain of the ship Endeavour. (SEFC, 3, p. 8)

我们在前面已经详细地讨论了 was/were to do 的含义和用法。

  1. What was to become of them all, he wondered.

  2. They said good-bye, not knowing that they were never to meet again.

(1)... some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed and some few to be chewed and digested.

(2) What was to become of them all, he wondered.

第一句中的 are to 是半情态动词, 表示“应当”“必须”的意思, 而第二句中的 was to 与动词原形连用, 构成过去将来时。它们是完全不同的结构, 不应混为一谈。见 be to 12^{1-2} , was/were to do 1,2^{1,2}

As early as his second film, Chaplin had developed his own manner of acting, the one that was to become world-famous.
