cattle

cattle，如同 people 和 police 一样，是个无标记复数名词，因此其谓语动词照例要用复数：

1. All his cattle were grazing in the field. 他所有的牛都在田野里吃草。

2. These cattle are from Holland. 这些牛是从荷兰来的。

poultry 作“家禽”解时,也是个无标记复数名词:

1. The poultry are being fed. 家禽正在吃食。

2. Our poultry are kept at the bottom of the garden. 我们的家禽养在花园的尽头。

cattle, 如同 people, police 一样, 是个无标记复数名词, 即没有复数标记但用作复数的名词(见 people, police), 因此, 其谓语动词总是要用复数。WDAE 的注释是 cattle[plural; used with a plural verb]。所以, 绝不可以说 cattle 是“单复数同形的名词”, “动词可用单、复数形式”。请看下面的实例:

1. Cattle are also kept, and about 15 million tons of wheat are grown every year. (澳大利亚)还饲养牛,此外,每年大约生产1,500万吨小麦。
2. All his cattle were grazing in the field. 他所有的牛都在田野里吃草。
3. These cattle are from Holland. 这些牛是从荷兰来的。
4. Cattle live on grass. 牛以草为食。 cattle 与 deer 和 sheep 的用法是完全不同的。后者是单复数同形的名词，即其复数永远采用零复数形式的名词(参见 deer, sheep):
5. Early one morning, I saw a deer dash across our backyard. 有一天的清晨,我看到一只鹿从我们的后院奔跑过去。
6. Sheep are grown for their wool and meat. 养羊是为了获取羊毛和羊肉。 cattle 与 fish 的用法也不相同。后者除可用作单数外，还具有两种复数形式: fish 和 fishes（参见 fish）。而 cattle 没有单数形式，也没有以 -s 结尾的复数形式，而只有 cattle 这一复数形式。 cattle 与 Japanese 和 Chinese 的用法更不相同。后者既可用作形容词，又可用作名词。在用作名词时，既可用作单数(a Japanese, a Chinese)，又可用作复数(five Japanese, five Chinese)。
