rather/fairly

It's rather a good idea.

那么,rather a good 是正确的用法吗?

例如,人们常说 fairly clean, rather dirty, fairly well, rather badly, fairly clever, rather stupid

  1. It's fairly warm in here.

  2. It's rather warm in here. (rather warm = too warm)

  3. It's rather cold this morning, but the weatherman says it will turn out fairly warm tomorrow.

  4. The temperature in the boiler is {fairlyhigh. (A)ratherhigh. (B)\left\{ \begin{array}{ll}fairly & \text{high. (A)}\\ rather & \text{high. (B)} \end{array} \right. (B)} \end{array} \right.

  1. This soup is rather hot.implies that it is a little too hot for him. This soup is rather hot.”

  1. I did rather well in that test—better than I expected. (LEG)

  2. I was rather pleased when I won the Nobel Prize. (LDCE)

  3. His English is rather good.

  4. She is rather a nice nurse.

  5. It's rather a good idea.

  6. You've done rather well. (ALD)

  7. rather better(CGEL)

This pair of shoes isn't good, but that pair is ____ better.

A. rather B. less C. ever D. hardly(全国研考)

如: rather good (bad, beautiful) 等。

ALD(89年版)明确指出:used before comparatives(用于比较级之前):

  1. This hotel is rather more expensive than that. (ALD)

  2. She drives rather faster than she ought. (ALD)

  3. Luna looked rather better-groomed in this picture than Harry had ever seen her in life. (J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows)

This question is ____ more difficult than that one.

A. rather B. quite C. very D. a little(河南省,02中考-40)

The dress was rather more expensive than I was expecting it would be, so I didn't buy it.
