照我的理解,another 虽然写成一个单词,但实质上是 an 和 other 两个词的融合,或者是 one other 的简略形式。我国许多英语著作都强调指出,“another 只能指单个人或物”(《英语常用词用法词典》,商务印书馆,p.62),“another 既不能加饰冠词和其它限制性形容词,也不能修饰复数名词”(《英语一千常用单词》,外研社,p.58)。但是常常读到 another five weeks, another ten years 这样的 another + 复数名词的用法,这该如何解释呢?

another 作“另一个”“不同的”解时, 只能修饰单数名词, 而不能修饰复数名词:

That's quite another matter. 这完全是另一码事。

One man's meat is another man's poison. 对甲有利未必对乙也有利(某人之佳肴即他人之毒药)。
但是, 当 another 作“再”(more)、“另外的”(additional, further, second) 解时, 则可以修饰复数名词, 但它后面大都跟有 few 或基数词:

The farm already has ten cows, but they are buying another five(cows) (five more cows). (CGEL) 这家农场已有 10 头奶牛,但计划再买 5 头。
