Might I call you by your first name?

(CGEL)

  1. A: Might I borrow your typewriter for a moment, do you think?

B: Perhaps you might, if you're very careful with it. (EGS)

  1. Might I ask where this verse came from?...’You might ask,’ Langdon said, with a friendly smile, but it’s a long story and we have very little time.’

might/could

I thought you ____ like something to read, so I have brought you some books.

A. may B. might C. could D. must(全国高考)

  1. He could reply by the weekend.

  2. You could start a bush fire.

might/must/should

——Are you coming to Jeff's party?——I'm not sure. I ____ go to the concert instead. A. must B. would C. should D. might(全国高考,00-15)

  1. You'd better not go inside. There might be snakes.

  2. I haven't decided. There's a talk on cancer that might be quite interesting, so perhaps I'll go to that.

  3. It is quite possible that the thief might put some meat in your bag, hoping you will be caught and called a thief.

might as well $^{1}$

____ you've got a chance, you might as well make full use of it.

A. As soon as B. After C. Although D. Now that(全国高考,99-11)

B. After

事实上, as well 意为: in addition, also, too‘也, 又, 同样地。’

Peter and Paul came to the zoo.

Paul came to the zoo. Peter came, too.

Paul came to the zoo. Peter came as well.

上文的作者误解了 might as well 的意义和用法。把 might 理解为“或许”,而把 as well 理解为“也”。

might have done $^{1}$

You must have been mad to speak to the servant! She might have called for help.

与该书配套的《教师教学用书》(p.139)说:“She might have called for help.

在表达这一层含义时,might have done 可用 may have done 来代替。 1. You might have dropped it somewhere. [‘It is possible that you (have) dropped it some-where.

  1. He may/might have gone. (= It is possible that he went/has gone.)

  2. The train might have been delayed. (= Perhaps the train has been delayed.)

  3. What do you think that noise was?’——It might have been a cat.’

  4. He may/might not have received the letter.

不难看出,问句中的 might have called for help 是属于上一用法。 在表达这层含义时,might have done 不能用 may have done 来代替。

  1. You were stupid to try climbing up there. You might have killed yourself.

  2. He came home alone. You shouldn't have let him do that; he might have got lost (but he didn't get lost).

  3. Why did you leave the matches there? The children might have started a fire.

  1. You might have told me!

  2. You might have been more careful.

  3. You might have let me know earlier!

  4. A lot of men died who might have been saved.

  5. You might both have been caught and killed!

You shouldn't have drunk the wine; it might have been drugged.

might have done $^{2}$

might have done sth.

  1. One reason that we have not had his letter yet is that he might have sent it to our old address by mistake.

  2. I might have come to a wrong conclusion. (Priestley)

  3. That was a bad place to go skiing. You might have broken your leg. (BEU)

  1. How quickly time passed! It might have happened yesterday. (Mansfield)

  2. A taxi cab, which might have been used by Lot and his family as they left Sodom and Gomorrah, took my luggage and struggled bravely through the traffic.

还应补充的是,might have + guessed (known, suspected), 用来加强抱怨的意味:

  1. I might have guessed he'd fail to read the instructions. (LEG)

  2. I might have known someone would upset her.

might have done/may have done $^{1}$

葛传梨教授在《英语惯用法词典》中说:“说‘也许曾经’该用‘may have…(past participle)’, 不可用‘might’…‘He may have seen her yesterday.’(他也许曾经在昨天看见她。)……‘He might have seen her yesterday.’ (p.363)

请问 He might have seen her yesterday.

葛老只是讲了 may have donemight have done 的相异之处, 而没有讲到它们的相同之处。 此时, 它与 may have donecould have done 同义, 故 He might have seen her yesterday.

  1. Grandpapa might have secretly married Pepita.

  2. He might/may have missed the train.

  3. It occurred to me that I might have got it wrong.

He might have seen her yesterday. 在这个意义上,might have done 是不能用 may have done 来替换的,见

might have done 用于虚拟语气

Yesterday, Jane walked away from the discussion. Otherwise, she ____ something she would regret later. A. had said B. said C. might say D. might have said(上海高考,96-21) 答案为 D。但是, might have said 是什么意思呢?

下面是 might have done 用于虚拟语气的实例(此时不能用 may have done):

  1. If we had found him earlier we might have saved his life.

might not/could not

(1)They might not be serious. (2)They couldn't be serious.

从结构上看,couldn't 中的 not 是否定情态动词 could 的,而 might not 中的 not 则是否定其后的动词的。

might not have done/could not have done

(1)He couldn't have made that mistake! (2)He mightn't have made that mistake!

  1. You might have dropped it somewhere.

  2. She could have gone off with some friends.

但是,couldn't have donemight not (mightn't) have done 的意思可就不同了。

  1. They couldn't have left so soon.

  2. Ann couldn't have seen Tom yesterday.

  3. ... her father could not have made such a mistake. ……

might have realized

He might have realized that you were pulling his leg.

请说明句子里 might have realized 的含义。

(If you tell someone that they might have done something, you are telling in an angry way that they ought to have done it.) :

  1. You might have let me know before! (Mansfield)

  2. But I think you might have told us half an hour ago. (Shaw)

  1. You might have warned me she was coming. (CGEL)

(He ought to have realized that you were pulling his leg.) (If you say that something might have happened, you mean that it is possible that it happened.),至于是否发生,说话人并不知道:

  1. He might well have said that. (EED)

  2. I might have come to a wrong conclusion. (Priestley)

  3. It seems reasonable that Saunière might have chosen to express his disappointment in his final good-bye. (Dan Brown, The Da Vinci Code)
