原译者完全误解了原义。directions 虽然有时可作“指示”(orders)解,但从它与 explore (探索,探究)的搭配(它在语义上是 explore 的动作客体)上来看,它在这里决不会具有此种含义。原译者忽略了它的另一个含义:“方面”“领域”。例如:
We are making changes in various directions. (ALD) 我们正在多方面进行改革。
I had no ambitions in this direction. (Pollitt) 在这方面我没有野心。
