a family which quarrel amongst themselves... a family which, a committee which, a group which 不是很常见的搭配吗?

The London team, which played so well last season, has done badly this season. (Eckersley)

It was raining, ____ was a pity.

A. what B. that C. the which D. which(Nelson, 300)

Snakes which are poisonous should be avoided.(应当避开有毒的蛇。)

  1. He invited us to dinner, which was very kind of him. (Eckersley)

  2. He changed his mind, which made me very angry. (LDCE)

  3. She has married again, which was unexpected. (CGEL)

  4. He said that he had never seen her before, which was not true. (PEG) (which 不是指整个主句,而是指宾语从句 he had never seen her before) 他说他以前从没见过她,这不是真的。

  5. They say he plays truant, which he doesn't. (CGEL) (whichplays truant)

  6. I said nothing, which made him still more furious. (PSA)

  7. {TheydislikeJohn,andthatsnotsurprising...TheydislikeJohn,whichisnotsurprising...(CGEL)\left\{\begin{array}{l} They dislike John, and that's not surprising... \\ They dislike John, which is not surprising... (CGEL) \end{array}\right.

  8. {Pam didn’t go to the show, and that is a pity.Pam didn’t go to the show, which is a pity. (CGEL)\left\{ \begin{array}{ll}\text{Pam didn't go to the show, and that is a pity.}\\ \text{Pam didn't go to the show, which is a pity. (CGEL)} \end{array} \right.

Later it( = the hovercraft) crossed the Channel, riding smoothly over the waves, which presented no problem. (New Concept English, Book 4, L. 35)

例如: the smiles of delight on all the faces that he liked 在这里要想根据语法关系来确定 that 的先行词,那是绝对办不到的。

  1. He likes dogs, which surprises me.
  2. Colin married my sister and I married his brother, which makes Colin and me double in-laws. The first tests on the Solent in 1959 caused a sensation. The hovercraft travelled first over the water, then mounted the beach, climbed up the dunes, and sat down on a road. Later it crossed the Channel, riding smoothly over the waves, which presented no problem.

Libraries made education possible, and education in its turn added to libraries: the growth of knowledge followed a kind of compound-interest law, which was greatly enhanced by the invention of printing. (New Concept English, Book 4, L. 27)

从语法上看,which 显然指代连接词 or 之后的分句:you may send them by themselves。

Education alone can conduct us to that enjoyment which is best in quality and infinite in quantity.

His brother has become an engineer, ____ he wanted to be. A. who B. what C. which D. that

这道试题要求选 C(which),即用 which 指代表人的名词 an engineer。

  1. He imagined himself to be an artist which he was not. (CGEL)

  2. They accused him of being a traitor, which he was. (CGEL)

  3. He is exactly the man which such an education was likely to form.

  4. He is a teetotaller, which I am not. (CGEL)

  5. It is Freud the analyst which we most enjoy.

  6. He talked like a native, which he hardly was.

  1. This is the baby which needs inoculation. (CGEL)

  2. His mother had ten children, of which he was the oldest.

  1. a family which dates back to the Norman Conquest (CGEL)

  2. the government, which is cutting its losses (CGEL)

  3. the committee which was responsible for this decision (CGEL)

  4. The audience, which was most enthusiastic, applauded the soloist.

My mother and my grandmothers could never have lived my life; my father and my grandfathers could never have imagined it. But they bestowed on me the promise of America, which made my life and my choices possible. (Hillary, Living History, p. 1)

请问上句中的 which 是指代 the promise of America 吗?
