case

英语语法著作把 in case 从句放在目的状语里讨论是恰当的。但应指出, in case 从句与其他目的状语不同, 它不是表示正面的目的, 而是表示否定的目的。CGEL 的作者们是这样来解释 in case 从句的:

1. Take your umbrella in case it rains. = Take your umbrella in order that, if it rains, you may not be affected. 带上你的伞，以防下雨（带上你的伞，以便下雨时你不会被雨淋着）。

2. Write a will in case you die without providing for your family. = Write a will in order that you do not die without providing for your family. 写个遗嘱吧，以免你去世后你的家属得不到赡养。

根据 R. Quirk 等人的研究,用作连词的 in case 除了表示条件(“如果”“万一”)、否定的目的(“以免”“以防”)之外,还可以表示原因兼可能性(reason/contingency)。在后一情况下,in case 可以释义为“because it may happen that”。例如:

1. John will come in case he is wanted. = John will come because he may be wanted. 约翰会来的, 因为可能需要他。

注: 这个句子里的 in case 也可以解释为表示条件(only if): 只有需要他, 他才会来。(He will come only if he is wanted, in the event of his being wanted.)

2. You should write a will in case something happens to you abroad. = You should write a will because something may happen to you abroad. 你应当写个遗嘱，因为你在国外可能发生什么事(……以防你在国外发生什么事)。

据此,你提问的句子里的 $\dot{in}$ case 可以理解为原因兼可能性:

I shall stay in the hotel all day in case there is news of Harry. = I shall stay in the hotel all day because there may be news of Harry. 我将在旅馆呆一整天，因为可能有关于哈里的消息。类例：

1. But sit where you are, if you please, in case I want you. 不过还是请你坐在原处别走，我可能需要你。

2. Wait outside in case you can be useful. 在外面等着,可能用得着你。

3. Take your skates in case you decide to go skating. 把冰鞋带去吧,你们也许会决定去滑冰呢。

（在上面三例中,汉语“因为”的含义暗含在句义中了）

上句中的 in case 不能译为“以防”，因为“以防”引导的分句内容都是不希望发生的或者希望避免的。

[试译]有人劝我办保险，以备医疗之需。

这种不含从句的 in case 相当于汉语的“以防万一”。可以看作是副词性短语。上面的

句子可译为:我想我不会用钱的,但是,我要带一些,以防万一。类例:

1. It may not rain, but you had better take an umbrella in case. 可能不会下雨,但是你最好还是带一把伞,以防万一。

2. The bus is usually on time, but start early, just in case. 公共汽车通常是准时的，但是，还是早点动身为好，以防万一。

[附注]有些英语词典不把这种用法的 in case 解释为副词性短语,而把它解释为连词,后面省略了从句:

1. I'll cook plenty of potatoes just in case (they decide to stay for dinner). 我打算多煮些马铃薯，以备万一（他们决定留下吃晚饭）。

2. It may rain — you'd better take an umbrella (just) in case (it does). 可能下雨——你最好带把伞，以防万一（下起雨来）。

in case 引导的从句可以使用一般现在时,但表示的是将来时间:

1. Take your coat in case it rains. 带上外衣，以防下雨。

2. Write a will in case you die. (CGEL) 写个遗嘱吧，以防你逝世。

如果 in case 从句使用一般过去时,则表示过去的将来:

Doctors and nurses remained above ground while police patrolled the streets in case anyone tried to leave the shelters too soon. (New Concept English, Book 3, L.7)

医生和护士则留在地面，警察在街上巡逻，以防有人试图过早离开防空洞。

如同其他目的状语从句常常要求一个表示推定性的情态动词一样, in case 引导的从句有时也要求使用一个表示推定性的情态动词 should 或 might。should 在这里的词汇意义相当于 might，切不可理解为“应当”：

1. Here's a shilling in case you should need it. (Mansfield) 给你一先令，也许你用得着它。

2. He left early in case he should miss the last train. 他动身很早，以防误了最后一班火车。

3. In case the wall should collapse, they evacuated the building. (GCE) 他们怕墙壁倒塌，便撤离了这幢大楼。

in case(如果,万一)引出条件从句时,一般是指将来时间(尽管动词时态是一般现在时)或过去将来时间,而 if 引出的条件从句可以指任何时间(现在、过去、将来)。

1. In case I forget, please remind me about it. (ALD) 如果我忘了，请提醒我一下。

2. In case the house burns down, we'll get the insurance money. (LDCE) 如果房子被烧毁,我们将领到保险金。

3. . . . police patrolled the streets in case anyone tried to leave the shelters too soon. (NCE 3, L.7) 警察在街上巡逻，以防有人试图过早地离开防空洞。

4. Leave her car where it is and put plainclothes on watch in case they try to come back to it. (Dan Brown, The Da Vinci Code) 把她的车留在原地，并派便衣监视，以防他们回头用车。(《达·芬奇密码》)

下面两个句子最能说明 in case 与 if 的区别：

(a) I'm taking an umbrella in case it rains later on. 我拿着一把伞，以防一会儿下雨。

(b) I'll take an umbrella if it rains later on. (AEP) 要是一会儿下雨,我就拿一把伞。

在句(a)中“我现在拿着一把伞”已成为事实，而不管天晴，还是下雨。而在句(b)中“我是否拿伞”决定于“过一会儿是否下雨”。

这里有无定冠词，意思有很大区别。
