on the contrary 与 to the contrary 的意义和用法是否相同?
-
You weren't boring me. On the contrary, you're interesting me frightfully. (Galsworthy)
-
On the contrary, we are not going to go. (MD)
-
“He’s no use at all.” “On the contrary, I’ve found him a great deal of use.”
-
“You don’t like football, do you?” “On the contrary, I like it very much.”
-
His vote was to the contrary. (CGEL)
-
Professor Wills argues, at his most polemical, to the contrary. (Washington Post)
-
Although Bill was going to the movies, he told Joe to the contrary.
to the contrary 有时可做“尽管”解:
I know she's unhappy, all her brave talk to the contrary. (LDCE)
但是,在美国英语中也有人把 to the contrary 用在句首,当做 on the contrary 来使用:
what I said was this year, not next.
