altogether 与 all together 是不是同一个词的两种写法？

它们不是同一个词。altogether 是副词，作“完全地”（entirely, completely）、“总共”“总的说来”解：

  1. I don't altogether agree with him. (ALD) 我并不完全同意他。

  2. Altogether there were six of us. (Evans) 我们总共6个人。

  3. Altogether, it was a good paper. (MD) 总的说来, 这是一份很好的报纸。

  4. The actor gave an altogether magnificent performance. (《韦氏词典》, 电子版) 那个演员的表演总的说来很动人。

  5. The bill came to $67 altogether. (同上) 账单总共是六十七美元。

all 与 together 分开写, 是个短语, 意为“在一起”“一同”:

我是一名中学高三英语教师。我为学生订用的《新编高中总复习优化设计英语(综合过关版)》(学苑出版社,2001年7月第一版)第一题:There are five thousand students in our school ____.

A. after all B. of all C. all together D. altogether

(高中第二册上)第7单元第2小题所给的答案是“C”，上海译文出版社出版、葛传架等人编写的《新英汉词典》(p.29)“all together”词条②：“总共=altogether”。该书p.1469 “together”词条中有一例“All together, there are 15 items.”笔者也曾翻阅过念大学时所做的由美籍教师任教的精读课笔记，其中有“总计、总共altogether=all together”。但您的《英语常见问题解答大词典》（黑龙江人民出版社，第四次印刷本，2003，p.78）“altogether/all together”一条目中却说“它们不是同一个词……all together是个短语，意为‘在一起’、‘一同’”，我真不知道该如何给学生讲。那道题是说选“C”还是说选“D”，或者说两者均可，以求蒙混过关。请指教。

不管以前的英语著作是如何讲解的，当代权威的英语辞书均认为这两个词不可混用。《牛津中阶英汉双解词典》(p.27)说：“altogether 和 all together 不相同。all together 表示‘一起’的意思。”CCEU(p.51)也说：“不要把 altogether 与 all together 弄混。后者是指‘在一起’、‘一起做某事’的意思。”

因此，上题的正确答案应当是D。请看下面的例证：

  1. That'll be £ 52.50 altogether, please. (CIDE) 一共是 52.50 英镑,请付款。

  2. You owe me £ 68.03 altogether. (ALD) 你一共欠我 68.03 英镑。
