year1

five years is/are

× Two weeks are enough for a nice vacation.

  1. Fifteen years represents a long period of his life.

  2. Five hours isn't enough.

  3. A hundred years is called a century.

  4. Two hours is the limit of this test.

  5. A number of years passes. (English for Today)

  1. How many days?” “Did you say that five days ____ required to complete the work?A. are B. were C. was D. is

  2. Fifteen minutes are all that I can spare to talk over this matter with you. (EPT 教程)

  3. A survey of the opinions of experts ____ that three hours of outdoor exercise a week ____ good for one's health.

A. show; are B. shows; is C. show; is D. shows; are(全国高考江西卷,07-25)

  1. Three years have elapsed since we last met. (ALD)

  2. The years 1978 through 1980 were among the most difficult, exhilarating, glorious and heartbreaking in my life. (Hillary, Living History) 1978

year after yearyear by year 都作“逐年,一年一年地”解。

year after year 含有“年年重复,毫无变化”之

意。而 year by year 含有“年年发生变化”之意。

  1. Year after year I have a birthday present from my parents.

  2. Year by year we grow a little older.

  3. They liked the cool wet weather there and their number increased year by year.

上面的解释也适用于 day after dayday by day:

  1. Day after day the mouse came back and was given more bread.

  2. Day by day the situation is improving.
