nearly1

New Concept English, Book 2, L. 52

I (near) (nearly) missed the bus this morning.

  1. He was nearly run over by a car. (New Concept English, Book 2, L. 52)

  2. The ball struck him so hard that he nearly fell into the water. (New Concept English, Book 2, L. 30)

  3. I nearly fell off my bike. (PEU)

  4. I nearly stopped and asked what he wanted.

Do you like those kinds of cigarette?” “_____ cigarette agrees with me.A. Hardly no B. Nearly no C. Rarely no D. Almost none(《新编大学英语四·六级常考词题库》,中国广播电视出版社,1996,p.408,nearly 条) 该书给的答案为 B(Nearly no)。

Both the downtoners almost and practically can intensify all indefinite pronouns, whereas nearly can intensify only assertive pronouns. Compare:

Almost Practically } {everybody all } came. Almost Practically * Nearly } {nobody came. any time will do. no compensation was given. " (CGEL, p. 450)

不难看出, 答案 B(Nearly no) 是错误的。能否选 D(Almost none) 呢? (参见 no/none)
