——介绍120个最常用的英语词根

为了普及英语词根的知识,本书第二部分要详细地介绍120个英语中最常用的词根,并提供对它们的同根词进行“说文解字”的实例。

120个词根的选择,考虑到孳生能力和代表性两方面。前者是主要的:选入的词根,在一部中型词典中,至少有数十个常用和较常用的同根词。说到代表性,其既有拉丁语源的,也有希腊语源的;既有动词性的,也有名词性的和形容词性的。

介绍每个词根,一般分3个步骤:

一、导言。从一般读者比较熟悉的几个同根词中引出词根的形态,追溯其词源,确定其含义,同时也指出其异形根的来源和辨异方法等。

二、相关同根派生词的选介与解形释义。先对读者熟悉的常用同根词进行词形分析和词义推演,让读者熟悉这个词根的形态、含义以及构词特点;然后再用同样的方法介绍其他常用或次常用同根词,以帮助巩固词根,并扩大词汇量。在介绍每个同根词时,以基本词(往往是“一次派生词”)为主,而对与该基本词相关的其他派生词(往往是“二次派生词”)略加词形分析,用倒三角(∇)引出,附在本词词条之后。

三、练习。设计一定份量的练习题,帮助读者进一步巩固词根,熟悉构词法,同时也为有进一步需求的读者提供更多的相关同根词的语料信息。为此,专门设计了4类共十余种标准化练习题。

第一类是复习性的练习。主要有:

1.[词根辨识]从不同的单词中辨识出相关词根。

2.[词根辨异]从不同的派生词中区别异源同形根。

这一类练习的目的是熟悉词根的形态。

第二类是判断性的练习。主要有:

1.[词海垂钓]利用所给的词缀从词典中“钓”出与某个词根相匹配的一组同根词,目的是熟悉词素构词的规律。

2.[同义相连]指出相关同根词的含义,目的是巩固新学的词汇,学习词缀知识,熟悉构词规律。

3.[词义判断]从多项选择中,判定某个单词的词义,目的是巩固词根知识,练习解形释义。

第三类是启发性的练习。主要有:

1.[望文生义]利用解形释义的方法,不查词典推断出比较简单的同根词的词义。

2.[由此及彼]利用词缀之间的同义、反义或类比关系,不查词典写出相关同根派生词的词义。

3.[举一反三]利用词缀知识与类比的方法,不查词典写出某个同根词的相关派生词的词义。

4.[无师自通]根据词素构词的规律,利用提供的构词成分,不查词典写出相关同根词的词形。

第四类是理解性或补遗性的练习。主要有:

1.[寻根问底]利用提供的同根词的词形、词义与提示,领会相关同根词的词义之由来,目的是熟悉词根,扩大词汇量。

2.[节外生枝]为了突出重点,把一些不便在正文中详细列举的异形根及其派生词作为编外余墨,附在这个练习题下。读者在这里可以领略到更为复杂的异形根现象,在扩大词汇量的同时,更全面地理解英语词素构词问题的复杂性。

在同根词“说文解字”的过程中,为了节省篇幅,本书采用符号来帮助行文。现将所用的各种符号说明如下:

一、字母符号。全部字母符号的用法均与现行的教科书、工具书等一致。例如:F代表(古)法语,GK代表希腊语,L代表拉丁语;n. 代表名词或名词性后缀,v. 代表动词或动词性后缀,a. 表示形容词或形容词性后缀,等等。此外,还用缩写符号sb和sth代替英语释义中两个使用率很高的单词somebody和something。

二、数码符号。罗马数码I、II、Ⅲ等,表示同一词条下不同的词性;阿拉伯数码①、②、③等,表示同一词性下不同义项。

三、印刷符号。印刷符号在本书中有特定的含义。需要结合实例,作具体说明。为此,先请看词目agent的整个词条:

首先要注意的是方括号([])。方括号前面是某个同根词的词目(在上例中,即黑体字agent)。方括号内部是这个词的形态分析和字面含义的归纳或推演过程;方括号之后是单词的释义及例句等。现分别详加说明:

方括号内部有以下几种符号:

1.等号(=)用来表示词根或词缀的英汉两种含义。上例中“ag=to do做”表示:词根ag意思为to do,即“做”。

2.分号(;)用来隔开构词词素,表示词形分析的结果。上例中“ag…; -ent n. …”意思是:单词agent可以分解为词根ag和名词性后缀-ent。

3.引号(“”)用来解说该单词的英汉两种字面含义。上例中引号中的内容可理解为:单词agent的字面含义为person who does,即“办事者”。

4.箭号(→)有两种用法:1)引号前面的箭号用来连接全部构词词素的含义与单词的字面含义,表示构词各部分的含义已被综合成单词的字面含义。在上例中,可以这样理解:从词根ag和后缀-ent的含义归纳出单词的字面含义是:“person who does 办事者”。2)引号后面的箭号用来表示字面含义已经发展成(方括号之后的)单词的实用义。在上例中,引号后面的箭号就意味着字面含义“办事者”已经发展为实用义“代理人”。

5.圆括号(())有3种用法:1)在词素后的圆括号表示对词素的来源或形态等作必要补充说明。如e-(ex-),表示前缀e-是ex-的异形态;2)在引号内的圆括号表示对造词意图的必要补充说明。如amateur条下的字面含义中:“person who does sth for loving it(rather than for money)因爱好(而不是为金钱)从事某项活动者”;3)单词内部的圆括号,常用来表示构词过程中某些字母的省略。如agility条下的词形分析中的[agil(e);-ity]。

在方括号之后的单词释义和例证中,也有几种符号;

1.箭号(→)用来表示词类的转变。

2.圆括号(())用以补充说明单词的释义。

3.斜线号(/)用来引出作为例证的句子或词组。

4.分号(;)在释义中用来分隔不同概念的词义。

此外,还用倒三角(∇)引出本词的其他派生词,并用方括号([])对这些派生词作简单的词形分析。

最后,需要特别指出:用于词根内部的圆括号(())用以表示与该词根同时存在的异形根。例如:am(at)表示词根am和其异体amat同时存在。

四、字体。所用字体均遵从一般词典的习惯。黑体表示本词词目;正体表示英语单词;斜体表示外来词、词根、词缀,以及英语词类的缩写符号等。

本书的符号系统并不复杂,读者只要留心往下阅读几页,就会习惯自如的。

〔1〕ag, act[L]= to do or drive 做;驱使

词根ag来自拉丁动词agere的词干部分,意思相当于英语的to do(做)或to drive(驱使)。act是大家很熟悉的单词,其实它来自ag的同源异形词根act。act来自agere的分词形式actum的词干部分,其基本含义也是to do或to drive。下面先分析几个由ag构成的常见派生词。

agent[ag=to do 做;-ent n.=person 人→“person who does 办事者”→]n. person who works for another person or organization 代理人/We need some sales agents in this city. 我们在本市需要一些代售商。
