本书的第二部分详细地介绍了100余个最常见的英语词缀，提供了相关派生词说文解字的实例与大量的练习。相信通过这部分的学习，大家对英语词缀的基本知识与实际用法都有了更深刻的体会。

为了满足读者进一步学习的需要，在第三部分中，我们再向大家介绍300余个较常见的英语词缀。这一部分上篇讲前缀，下篇讲后缀。考虑到本书的篇幅，我们打算用简介的方式进行解说。词缀的顺序排列以首字母为准。每介绍一个词缀，先用一行文字简单指出其形态、语源和英汉对等含义。如果存在异体，则先正体，后异体（如：aeri-，aero-）；如果正体与异体之间只相差一个连接字母，则将该连接字母放在括号中（如：amb（i）-；anthrop（o） -等）。例证部分也作简单处理：每个词缀下列3至6个有代表性的相关派生词。一般情况下，只列3个例词。如果遇到异形词缀或“一缀多义”、“一缀多性”，则酌情增加到4至6个例词。例词排列的顺序与简介词缀的那一行文字相一致，即先正体后异体，先常用义后引申义，等等。选用的例词一般都是原生派生词或二次派生词，尽量不选入多层派生词，除非这些多层派生词更为常见或有特殊的例证作用。

这300余个词缀的选介标准，依然兼顾孳生能力与代表性两个原则。当然，它们的构词能力一般说来不如第二部分介绍的词缀，但是其相关派生词的数量仍相当可观，而且其中许多是我们必须掌握的常用词或次常用词。在代表性方面，除了兼顾各种语源之外，我们还着重选入一定数量的术语词缀。这些术语词缀大多都是表示一般的科普知识概念的，如：日月星空、善恶美丑、声光化电，等等。专业性太强的则待今后另找机会介绍。

后面将要介绍的数百个词缀所包含的相关派生词数量很大，其中或多或少是读者已经熟悉的。所以，希望大家在现有的词汇知识的基础上，尽快掌握这些词缀的形态与含义，并努力把它们运用于阅读的实践中去。作者相信，这数百个词缀一旦为您所掌握，就会发挥意想不到的威力：帮助您分析、猜测并掌握在一般性阅读中遇到的许多生词，三拳两脚就能制服许多“拦路虎”。这样，您就可以大大节约查词典的时间，尽快地提高自己的阅读能力。

为了达到上述目的，作者有两点建议：

一、这部分材料虽为简介，却也有一定的可读性与实践性，建议读者不要止于一般的浏览，而是认真地通读一番。先利用自己熟悉的派生词进行“说文解字”，尽快地掌握词缀的形与义，然后再利用词缀的形与义去“心领神会”书中列举的其他相关派生词，分析其词形与词义的由来。为了帮助读者的阅读与练习，作者对列举的例词做了必要的处理。凡是原生派生词，都在词义后用方括号标明词根的英文含义或者术语后缀的英语含义与属性（如系基本后缀，则只标属性，英语含义从略）。例如：“acronym n. 首字母缩略词”这个例词后面有“［onym＝name］”，“acrophobia n.［医］高空恐怖”后面有［-phobia n.＝fear］。凡是二次派生词中词基单词发生形态变化的，均在词义后面的圆括号中用逆箭号引出词基单词的原形。例如：“cisalpine a. 在阿尔卑斯山这一边的”后面的（←Alpine）。此外，对词义较生僻的词基单词也在圆括号中注明词义。例如：在例词“duotone a. 双色的”后面有（tone　n. 色调）。

二、这部分的材料还可以充当小型的工具书使用。建议读者利用它来分析阅读过程中遇到的生词的形与义，扩大自己的词汇量并增强吸收词汇的能力。例如，您在阅读过程遇到biogeography这个生词，发现其中geography是个熟词。怎么办？且慢去翻词典。因为根据您现在的水平，不难分析bio-可能是个前缀，更可能是个术语前缀。于是，这份材料就派上用场了：翻开上篇，查前缀的B栏，可以找到“bio-［GK］＝life生命，生物”，由此您不难判断biogeography的词义为“生物地理学”。若是不放心，不妨搬出词典查证一番。如果词典验证了您的分析与判断，得意之余，别忘了将这个在阅读过程“捕获”的生词收在bio-栏目下。
