——162个较常见的英语后缀及其相关派生词举例
在本书的第三部分下篇,我们将简单地向读者介绍一百多个较常见的英语后缀,其中相当数量属于术语后缀。
这些后缀的选介标准、编排方式、例词处理等都与第三部分上篇大体相同,请读者参见那里的文字说明。但是,由于后缀本身的特点,我们在选介与编排方面采取了一些相应的处理方法。下面对此作几点说明。
一、在一般情况下,我们只介绍基本的、单纯的后缀,不介绍由多个后缀迭生的复合后缀。例如:介绍了名词后缀-um(表示场所等),就不介绍含义相同的-arium(= -ary+-um),-orium(= -ory+-um);介绍了动词后缀-esce(表示动作开始),就不再列入其义自明的相关名词后缀-escence(= -esce+-ence)和形容词后缀 -escent(= -esce+-ent)。不过,在个别情况下,由于某些复合后缀更为常见,我们也酌情予以介绍。例如:-archy(=-arch+-y),-gamy(= -gam+-y),-parous(= -para+-ous)等。
二、在一般情况下,我们不把“连接字母+后缀”的形式看成后缀的异体,以尽量减少因异体带来的判断、识别、编排与检索上的困难。我们或者把上述连接字母看成独立成分,或者将其归属于术语前缀,这样就排除了许多后缀的异体问题。例如:在primiparous(初产的)一词中,我们把词根prim与术语后缀-parous之间的连接字母-i-看成独立成分,于是就不存在-iparous这样的后缀异体。又如:在geography(地理)一词中,连接字母-o-已归并于词根ge,于是,单词被分解成geo-与-graphy两个术语词缀,也避免了-ography这个异体的出现。
三、在排列时,依然按后缀的首字母为序。如果后缀的正体与异体并存,则以正体的首字母为准,而将异体排在同一条目内,列在正体之后。例如:在“-an,-ian,-n[L]...”这个条目中,-an是正体,所以将其排在A栏的相应位置上。
四、对同形异义后缀,我们根据语源、属性与含义方面的不同情况,用3种方式分别予以处理:
1.如果语源或属性不同,因而含义相去甚远的,则分为不同条目,标为~1,~2等。例如:
-ad1[GK]n. 表示“集合”的概念
-ad2[L]ad. 表示“朝…方向”
又如:
-le1[OE]n. 表示“小的…”
-le2[OE]v. 表示反复或连续的动作
2.如果语源、属性相同,但含义相差较大,则在同一条目下,把不同含义标为①~;②~等。例如:
-um[L]n. 表示:①“…场所”②“…元素”
3.如果语源相同、属性不同,但语义相近或相关,则尽可能在同一条目中归并处理。例如:
-oid[GK]a. & n. 表示“如…物(的)”
在这些情况下,例词也都按相应的顺序列举。
五、在简介后缀的那行文字中,使用两种方式介绍后缀的含义:对术语后缀,我们提供英、汉两种含义。例如:
-algia[GK]n.=pain痛
-blast[GK]n.=cell细胞
而对那些基本后缀,我们只指出汉语的含义。例如:
-ac[GK]a. 表示“属于…的”、“具有…性质的”
-aire[F]n. 表示“与…相关的人”
这是因为后缀之间语义相近者甚多,读者对此也较为熟悉。这样简化处理,既节省篇幅、方便编排,又可以让读者一眼就判断出哪些是术语后缀,哪些是公认的基本后缀。
六、语源符号中出现了一个[MnE],即Modern English,用来标识那些在现代英语中出现的新词缀或新用法,例如:-fashioned,-person等。请注意[MnE]与[ME]的不同,后者指的是Middle English(中古英语)。
