Chapter 3
1 My friends dislike me because I’m handsome and successful.
2 Perhaps because most of today's cross-cultural marriages occur because of “true love”, these couples work hard to overcome their difference.
妙语点睛 一般不会说perhaps for*或perhaps as*或perhaps since*。
3 Since we don't have class tomorrow, why not go out for a picnic?
4 Since you are an English major, I guess you can help me with this sentence.
5 As Monday is a national holiday, all government offices will be closed.
6 It rained last night, for the ground is wet this morning.
Because it rained last night, the ground is wet this morning.
常用的介词有:because of, due to, owing to。
1) We had an accident because he was careless.
2) We had an accident due to his carelessness.
3) Owing to his carelessness we had an accident.
此处不能说due to he was careless*。
一、in that
1 English has an advantage over most of the other languages in that it has become, so to speak, an international language.
English has an advantage over most of the other languages显然是在说英语与其他语言相比的优势,然后接连词in that引导的从句,来说明为什么会有这种优势。
2 E-mail is different from the traditional mail in that it sends and receives mails in a second.
3 Mercury differs from other industrial metals in that it is a liquid.
二、seeing (that), now (that), considering (that), given (that)
4 Seeing that it's raining hard, we’ll have to stay here for the night.
5 They did the job very well, considering that they had no experience.
6 Given that they are inexperienced, they’ve done a good job.
7 Now that the semester is finished, I’m going to rest a few days and then take a trip.
8 Now that you are eighteen, you can get a driver's license.
三、not that...but that
9 I haven't finished writing the report yet, not that I’m lazy, but that I have no time.
四、inasmuch as, insomuch as, in as much as, in so much as
inasmuch as, insomuch as, in as much as和in so much as也可表原因,但显得文绉绉的,不太常用,通常只用于很正式的书面语或演讲中。
10 Inasmuch as the two government leaders could not reach an agreement, the possibilities for peace are still remote.
1 You don't love a woman because she is beautiful.
You don't love a woman because she is beautiful, but she is beautiful because you love her.
2 Don't cry because it is over, but smile because it happened.
Don't cry because it is over,我们完全可以按正常情况翻译成“不要哭,因为都结束了”。但如果结合下文but smile because it happened,我们就不能这样翻译了。
1. 只能按正常情况翻译;
2. 两种翻译都可以,具体如何理解要看上下文;
比如上面的例句you don't love a woman because she is beautiful就可以有两种理解,但是一旦有了下文but she is beautiful because you love her就只能有一种理解了,即按照否定转移来翻译。
3 1) I don't study English just because it is so difficult.
2) I don't study English just because I like to.
4 He doesn't exercise because he likes to.
A. He likes to exercise by himself. B. He exercises for reasons other than enjoyment.
C. He's glad he doesn't have to exercise. D.He doesn't have enough time to exercise.
5 I wouldn't quit my job because maybe I could get a better one. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush(一鸟在手胜过双鸟在林),我们更要按否定转移来理解。
6 I didn't attend the meeting because he was present, too.
其一,正常翻译时可以写成“I didn't attend the meeting, because he was present, too.”,即添加一个逗号,来分隔主句和从句。 其二,作为否定转移来理解,相当于说“I attended the meeting, not because he was present, too.”。
7 I did not marry her because I loved her.
其二,作为否定转移来理解,相当于说“I married her, not because I loved her but for some other reasons.”。
8 “I don't think they’re piling on because I’m a woman. I think they’re piling on because I’m winning.”(Hillary Rodham Clinton, on intensifying criticism by rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination on November 2, 2007.)
9 Mike: I think music has changed a lot in recent years, all over the world. For example, when I was at university, we didn't like singers because of their looks or how popular their music was. We loved them for being real.
Lili: What do you mean by “real”? Everyone is real. See? Touch my arm. You can feel me, so I’m real.
Mike: That's not what I meant by “real”. I mean really talented, real musicians.
10 I didn't come here to scold you.
11 He won't go to just any school.
A. He's the only one who won't go with us. B. He just won't go to school.
C. He’ll probably study in several locations. D.He's particular about where he goes to school.
12 I didn't write that memo to the department chair to amuse myself.
A. I wrote a funny letter to the department chair. B. I don't think the department chair will write me a letter.
C. The department chair was amused by my letter. D.I wrote to the department chair about a serious matter.
妙语点睛 此句中的amuse要重读,即表明didn't是否定amuse的,not amuse表示“不是开玩笑”,即对应于D选项中的about a serious matter,所以D正确。
