Chapter 8
1 The boy can be very naughty.
2 The boy looks pale. He could be sick.
3 There are times when the traffic here can be very heavy.
4 John isn’t here now. He could be caught in the traffic jam.
5 E-mail or E-jail?
E-mail can be e-jail. You might spend hours writing and responding to e-mails when you should be hitting the books for an upcoming exam. Or, you might be signed up for so many daily services, such as horoscopes, news services, or personals, that your mailbox is so filled up with“junk mail”, that finding the important e-mails through your mailbox may take hours.
6 Remember, it’s not what happens to us that makes the difference in the quality of our lives. I believe that everything that happens can be a lesson. Next time things don’t seem to be going the way you want, ask yourself what the positive aspect is. What’s the benefit in the adversity? You’ll have greater enjoyment and learn more in the process.
7 The body uses protein to build muscles, and it uses fat to absorb the vitamins in food. Protein and fat are found in foods like milk, cheese, meat, fish, and eggs. Too much fat, however, can be harmful.
8 Grammar can be fun!
9 Even experienced teachers can make mistakes.
10 Measles can be quite dangerous.
11 Prolonged exposure to the sun can burn your skin.
12 Don’t stay outside too long on hot days. Too much exposure to the sun can be dangerous.
13 Winter here can be really cold.
14 It can sometimes get very cold here in winter.
15 It can be quite cold in Kunming in January.
16 Such an accident can happen.
17 You can be very critical sometimes.
18 A woman can do anything when jealous.
19 He can be very rude.
20 A visit to the dentist can be frightening.
21 Things can get crazy around here sometimes.
Even experienced teachers can’t make mistakes. *
Too much fat, however, can’t be harmful. *
Measles can’t be quite dangerous. *
Prolonged exposure to the sun can’t burn your skin. *
22 A: This must be the way to the post office.
B: This can’t be the way to the post office.
23 A: The restaurant is always empty.
B1: It isn’t good.
B2: It can’t be good.
A: The restaurant is always empty.
B: It can be bad. *
此时,可以用must,may,could或might来表示“推测”,即“具体的可能”。
A: The restaurant is always empty.
B: It must be bad.
It may be bad.
It could be bad.
It might be bad.
24 A: Do you know where John is now?
B: I don’t know. He could be in the library.
这时同样不能用can说成“I don’t know. He can be in the library. *”。
25 Can measles be quite dangerous?
26 Can prolonged exposure to the sun burn my skin?
27 A: Do you think he can be right?
B: He can hardly be right.
28 Someone is knocking at the door. Who can it be?
但could,may和might也可以表示“理论上的可能”。
29 Internet May Cause Depression
Internet use may cause a decline in psychological well-being, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University.
The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in well-being, researchers hypothesized. Faceless, bodiless“virtual”communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world via the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.
“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology per se; it’s about how it is used,”says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study’s sponsors.“It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”
Internet use can cause a decline in psychological well-being。
30 A student acquires knowledge mainly from the textbook and in class. When he graduates from school he can do nothing. Everything is different from what teachers told him. He may be disappointed. He may be frustrated. He may be afraid to face the real world.
31 Don’t go there; it could/may/might be dangerous!
32 You may be one person to the world, but you may also be the world to one person.
To the world you may just be one person, but to me, you mean the world!
